Windows 10 install won't work because screen resolution to low

I am trying to install windows 10 on one of my computers, but the monitor says it cannot display the video. What is the solution for this? My monitors resolution is 1280 x 1024

Hello,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

With the issue description, I understand that you are getting a black screen with an error: “Cannot Display This Video Mode; resolution 1280X1024 60 Hx” on your computer. I will certainly help you in getting this issue resolved. I would appreciate if you could help me with more information

          1. When did you get this error & black screen on the computer (After installation or before installation)?

          2. What is the make and model of the computer?

          3. Are you able to see the Windows logo when you power on the computer?

          4. Do you have any external device connected to the computer?

I would suggest you to disconnect the external devices that are connected with the computer apart from Keyboard and Mouse.

Let’s try to boot the computer in Low Resolution Mode and check if helps

  • Restart (to get a known UI state)

  • Press the Space bar (to dismiss the default lock screen)

  • Press ESC twice (to step out of the last user login)

  • Shift + Tab (to select the power button)

  • Enter (To open the restart options)

  • Up arrow

  • Shift + Enter

  • Wait a bit, about 4-5 seconds

  • Hit Shift - Tab three times.

  • Press Enter.

  • Hit Tab three times. Then hit Enter again.

  • Hit Shift-Tab three times, then enter twice

  • Wait a bit, the machine should be rebooting. This usually takes 15 seconds.

  • Finally, press 3.

Hope this information is helpful. Please write back to us if you need any further assistance, we'll be glad to assist you.

Regards

Neha

Hi,

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community. I am sorry to know that you are facing issues with Windows 10.

I do appreciate your efforts and time. Do not worry, will assist you with the issue.

Method 1: Update video adapter driver.

Verify that the latest drivers for the display adapter are installed.

  1. a.    At the Start screen, type Windows Update.
  2. b.    Click or tap Settings on the right side of the screen, and then select Install optional updates from the left results
  3. c.    When the Windows Update control panel opens, click on “Check for Updates” on the top left corner to receive a fresh list of updates.

I would also suggest you to refer to the following article and perform the steps mentioned under “Update driver” section.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/all-drivers (Also applicable for windows 10)

Method 2:

Check the Device status in the Device Manager. The yellow exclamation mark provides an indication of a device's current status and could mean that there is a system resource conflict, a driver issue, or any number of other things. Refer to these steps to open Device Manager.

Step 1. Press Windows and X keys together.

Step 2. Click on Device Manager.

Step 3. Expand Sound, video and game controller.

Step 4. Please check with the optional driver updates through windows update and check if it helps. And for more information I suggest you to refer the link below.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/all-drivers (Also applicable for windows 10)

Method 3:  If the issue still prissiest, install the Windows 8.1 drivers in compatibility mode.

Step 1. Download the Windows 8.1 drivers.

Step 2. Right click on the downloaded driver file.

Step 3. Click/tap on Troubleshoot Compatibility.

I also suggest install the latest drivers available for Windows 10 and check if it helps.

Hope this helps in resolving the issue. If the issue persists, do get back to us. We will be happy to assist you.

None of these things help. The error happens outside of windows, it happens after the computer reboots to the installer. Installing drivers in Windows is not going to help the installer.
