Windows 10 HP Envy plugged in not charging

I have an HP Envy 15-ah151sa laptop. OS windows 10 64bit.

For the last 5 days my battery has not been charging whilst plugged in.

The laptop whilst asleep or turned off will charge up OK.

Only when the laptop is turned on, the battery icon shows up as if the machine is not on charge, when it is.

The laptop itself recognises the charger is connected as the small LED next to the AC charger port, lights up white. Usually, when the laptop is turned on, this would be orange if the battery was charging. For example, right now my battery is at 95% and draining, the charger is plugged in, the small LED is glowing white, yet the battery is not charging.

When i go to my device manager and uninstall the ACPI - compliant control method battery, turn off (not restart) my machine, and turn it back on, the battery icon shows "plugged in, not charging" - if i unplug the charger (in the same session) and put the charger back into the machine, the same issue as above.

I have run the diagnostic checker from start up (by hitting F2), and also the diagnostic checker in the HP support assistant and the reports come back that the battery is OK. I also spent £30.00 replacing the charger (the pin was slightly bent on the previous one), but unfortunately also, to no avail. I have reinstalled windows, but also to no avail. All updates and drivers are fully up to date.

Please help...

Thanks

Tom

You can try generating a batter report to check the health of the battery:

https://www.groovypost.com/howto/generate-batte...

also try resetting your BIOS:
https://www.groovypost.com/howto/reset-pc-bios-...

It could suggest you need to update your chipset drivers and BIOS.
I recommend you update the most critical ones: BIOS, Chipset

Please answer ALL of the following [admittedly tedious] diagnostic questions by number, preferably without quoting my post:

1a. When (approx. date) did you purchase the HP computer?

1b. Where or from whom did you purchase the computer?

1c. Was the computer sold to you as a brand-new, never-been-used-by-anyone-else computer or as a used (refurbished) computer?

2. Did the computer come with Win10 preinstalled, did you do a clean install of Win10, or did you upgrade a Win7 computer or a Win8.1 computer [<=PICK ONE!] to Win10?

3. Have you ever replaced the battery?

4. Has a Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer since you bought it?

5. Have you ever run the Norton Removal Tool and/or the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool?

6. What Version & OS Build of Windows 10 is currently installed?

• Press & hold the Windows Key and press the R key. In the RUN dialog, type WINVER and press the Enter key.

1a.  early 2015

1b. PC world

1c. Brand new

2. Win10 preinstalled

3. No, its integrated and not accessible

4. McAfee yes - I removed it from the system from new, and removed again the other day when I reinstalled windows as it severely effects laptop performance. It came pre-installed on the machine.

5.  Not that I'm aware of.

6. Win 10, version 1703, OS Build 15063.726

The battery can be replaced but it's not an easy task as it involve opening the case & messing around with the innards. Average battery lifespan is two (2) years so...

That being said...

Fact: McAfee (and Norton) applications are notorious for not uninstalling (or upgrading) cleanly. The "leftovers" may be your troublemaker here.

Does running the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool [1] - followed by a reboot - make any difference?

I tried the BIOS reset by hitting F2 from start up, there was not an option to restore to default but:

There was an option to update, but this would not work as I didn't have a 'BIOS image'.

There was an option to 'BIOS Rollback', which I chose, this rolled back my BIOS to F.10, but the battery problem still exists.

To all the MVPs and responders, thanks for your help so far!

See if replacing the battery makes a difference. cf. https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04351268

TIP: They're getting sneaky these days. Chances are you'll need to purchase the battery from HP or from a third-party battery outfit which HP "endorses."
