I was having this same problem. One thing that I did, and it actually worked for me, hopefully it will work for you.

1. Right click on the Sound icon on your bottom right.

2. Click on Recording devices

3. Right click on the microphone.

4. Click on the Properties

5. Click on Enhancements

6. Check the 'Disable' box inside the box.

7. Click 'Ok'

I also went to my 'microphone privacy setting' (it should appear if you type 'microphone' in Cortana) and I turned off all 'allow these apps to use my mic'.

I hope this works for you. It worked for me. <3 <3

Still not working for me.  I did find out one more interesting fact:

I tried to go to Speech Properties (Advanced Speech Options -- under Speech Recognition)

and when I selected my Xbox 360 headset as the recording device, and restarted Speech Properties, it gave me the following error message:

"Could not initialize volume meter, please select a different recording device"

FYI -- I've messed with Privacy-Microphone and Control Panel-Sound settings to no avail:  default devices, enabling/disabling, reinstalling drivers, levels, mute, etc.  Nothing works.  This is DEFINITELY a Windows 10 problem.  My chat headset works great on my Xbox360 and when I was on Windows 7, my USB Xbox360 controller and chat headset were working perfectly.  I'm regretting my upgrade and highly debating reverting back.

Update:  I found another thread and they recommended the follow which worked for me...

Xbox360 Headset Microphone Not Working
  • Plug in Controller and Headset
  • Control Panel - Sound - Recording
    • Disable alternate microphones (eg: webcam mic)
  • Device Manager
    • Sound, video and game controllers - Headset (XBOX 360 For Windows)
      • Uninstall driver
    • Scan for Hardware Changes (will auto-install Xbox Headset)
  • Restart

The problem i had the beginning setting i set for Realtek Hd audio manager Was only for listening so i researched some things And still nothing on how to fix it Then i thought of just plugging the 2 cords in back of my pc instead of Top So meaning i had them plugged in the front ports then i changed them to the rear ports and it worked And it looks better aswell If that still doesnt work keep doing research and if still cant figure i recommend https://www.amazon.com/Avantree-Wireless-Bluetooth-Foldable-Headphones/dp/B01A0EAYDI/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1513720279&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=Gaming+wireless+headphones&psc=1 For  cheaper prices or Better yet https://www.amazon.com/Razer-Thresher-Ultimate-Retractable-Microphone/dp/B072FLD6YG/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1513720355&sr=1-6&keywords=razer+wireless+headphones They are quite expensive but it is well worth with the feel of them And how long they will actually last

-Edit  The reason im suggesting wireless is most likely you will not have a problem with them and even if your Ports brake your still usable from bluetooth Personally i prefer Wired but The first cheaper one also comes with a cord if yo uwant that instead and manage to fix the ports
