Windows 10 freeze on boot/loading, random freezes, boots 1 in 10/15 times or in safe mode

Hi,

Im running a pretty old system (2600k, asrock z77 ex4) - I don't rule out a hardware failure (mobo or psu) but wanted to consult.

The PC is booting one in 10/15 times - it freezes at loading circle dots and then shuts down. It can boots in safe mode every time. I also do encounter random freezes then shutdowns. Did all stress tests for GPU, PCU, memtest and stuff. No failures.

It tried unplugging all hdds, all usb, the PCIe Firewire extension, GPU, ran on one RAM dimm, changed it every boot - same

Also tried with fresh install. Problem persisted. The only constant is the SSD drive.

It sometimes just shuts down when trying to auto repair.

Hard Disk Sentinel shows (840  Evo 240 GB):

Also I did enable windows boot log, and it shows THOUSAND of BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED (many many maaany more than posted here)

Could the SSD be the problem? Mobo failing? PSU dying? Any way to troubleshoot it further?

Thanks,

Jakub

Hi barnej, I am Rob, an independent and a 15 time and dual award MVP specializing in Windows troubleshooting and Bluescreen analysis. Please remember as independents we are not responsible for the development of Windows or the computer hardware and drivers. If you will work with me I will be here to help until the issue is resolved.

Yes, it could be the SSD as they tend to act strange as they age especially if too hot when operating which can cause issues both then and after cooling down. Although there can certainly be other hardware involved.

1. Many SSD's actually need a heat sink and/or good airflow around them. Check with the SSD maker's support. Also, check there for updated firmware.

2. Remove ALL power and reseat all the cards, memory, and cables (on both ends when possible) - actually remove and replace do not just snug. Clean out any dust bunnies, Ensure all the fans are working.

3, Please note that consumer-level troubleshooting software rarely specifies a particular piece of hardware so a lot of close observation is required.

PassMark Burnin Test - Free Trial - note the trial version will only run for 15 minutes and it really needs to be used for many hours. So if you use this you will need to faithfully and quickly restart it every 15 minutes. <-- This is important.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the reply. As I stated in my original post, I did stress test all of my hardware multiple times (OCCT), sometimes for more than 4hrs. I do keep my PC clean, i change thermal paste very 2 years. I did reseat all of my hardware, changed sata cables and sata port prior to writing this post. I did run my system in any possible combo. My SSD is a 2,5 ssd, not an m2 so it cannot be heatsinked. It runs at 30-35C tops.

The freezes/shutdowns are not load-dependend. Sometimes on opening window, an app, changing view in software.  The boot freezes always happens at the same time.

Do you know what might be the cause of so many BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED errors? Here's the link to pastebin: https://pastebin.com/aW5Ku7Hg

Thank you,

barnej

It is best to use more than one or even a few stress tests as they actually will show different results, especially with close observation. Unfortunately, consumer-level tests rarely will actually point to any specific hardware cause.

As indicated you may be right about the SSD as they can act exactly as you are experiencing as the age. Even more so if they overheat or have been exposed to external heat

I suggested exactly what I would do if I had the same issue and I have worked on many many thousands of cases and there is not likely to be any quick fix.

Please review and use all 3. steps in my previous post and you might find they will help to troubleshoot and resolve your issue.

Rob
