Windows 10 Desktop Color And Theme Revert back to default

For over a month now, sometimes when I bring my desktop computer out of sleep mode, my desktop color and theme revert back to the default color and theme you get after first installing Windows 10. I reset them to my selections but a few days later it happens again. This does NOT happen on a cold boot. I have all the latest updates. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi Rocky,

To better assist you with your concern, let us know if there were any changes made on your computer prior to the issue. Also, have you gone through Settings > Personalization > Colors and checked if the Automatically pick an accent color from my background option is turned On

Regards.

Are you logged in using a Microsoft Account, and also using the same account on any other PC?

Yes, I am logged in using my Microsoft Account. I have other Windows 10 laptops but they have not been turned on for several months.

Thank you for providing us the necessary information. We suggest that you follow these troubleshooting steps and check if the issue persists:

Method 1: Disable sync settings from the other devices.

When sync is turned on, Windows keeps track of the settings you care about and sets them for you on all your Windows 10 devices. To disable sync settings, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Start button and choose Settings.
  2. Go to Accounts > Sync your settings.
  3. Make sure that the Sync settings option is turned Off.

Method 2: Use the Deployment Image Service and Management Tool (DISM).

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type command prompt, press and hold (or right-click) Command Prompt, and then select Run as administrator > Yes.
  2. At the command prompt, type dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth (note the space between dism.exe and / and each switch (/)).
  3. If DISM finds corrupted files and replaces them, restart your PC and see that improves performance.

Note: You need to be connected to the Internet to use DISM, and it might take several minutes to finish.

For more info about DISM, see Fix Windows Update errors by using the DISM or System Update Readiness tool.

Let us know how it goes.

I implemented your suggested Method 2 and it completed 100% with no file updates mentioned. I'll monitor my desktop and let you know if the problem returns.

More Background Information

My desktop has 2 displays and I use a black background color and a separate image for each display.  Sometimes one image is displayed on both screens and I use the following command from a reply to Dual Display Backgrounds in Windows 10 to correct this:

control /name Microsoft.Personalization /page pageWallpaper

Sync is turned ON for all my computers. My understanding (maybe incorrect) is Sync keeps its information stored on my OneDrive but I see no files there regarding this. Should there be a separate file for each computer being syncd?

I have sync turned on so if I change the picture on Display 1 on my desktop system, it will automatically display on my laptops when I next use them. I could be wrong here too.

Both my laptops where updated to the Anniversary 1607 update but have not been updated or used since then. I don't know if this is starting to "affect" my desktop.

Thanks for your help and feedback.

In this case, we suggest that you update your laptops as well to ensure that all configuration will sync across all your devices. Regarding the sync settings, this option does not apply to OneDrive since OneDrive has its own sync process. You may find these Microsoft articles helpful:

My computer was asleep for about 2.5 hours and when I moved my mouse ... default Windows 10 screen again. My laptops are currently in storage so I cannot bring them up to the current update level. I currently have a hiberfil.sys, swapfile.sys and a pagefile.sys on my C: drive. Could the hiberfil.sys be the culprit?

Thanks.
