Windows 10 check for updates doesn't work

I have used the Action Center in Windows 10 to access

Settings

     Updates and Security

But I can use the Windows Update Button to check for updates.

Is this associated with the problem I have not being able to use Edge and Store?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Step 3: Perform System File Checker (SFC) scan, to repair the missing/corrupted system files.

  1. Press ‘Windows + X’ keys.
  2. Click on ‘Command Prompt (Admin)’ to bring up an elevated command prompt.

Note: Click ‘Yes’ if it prompts for permission.

    3. In the command prompt type in the following command and then press Enter.

         sfc /scannow

Let us know the status, we are glad to assist you further.

Well  I did the sfc / scannow

the reply was everything is fine.

I did the windows update thing... and I said it fixed something.

So now these are the things that don't work

  • Can't sign in with a Microsoft account
  • Can get updates
  • can get Edge to connect to the internet

These issues seem to be all related to internet conectivity

Yet Chrome and Firefox both work

I get updates for other software.

So after reading information where I keep seeking the sfc /scannow

nothing has improved.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I ran the fix, it did something to the updates

but then replied unable to Trouble shooting couldn't identify the problem... I'm not sure if this is a good thing or bad thing.

But a the moment

  • Edge doesn't connect to the net
  • I can't sign in with my Microsoft account
  • I can't access Microsoft Store
  • When I try to check for updates in Settings Updates and Security, the reply is can't get online to check for updates.

So I seem to have some sort of internet connect problem.

Yet Chrome, IE, Firefox all connect to the net, and other software applications update.

So maybe something will happen in the future... maybe it won't

I have tried all of this repeatedly. It DOES NOT WORK. Windows MAIL, and CALENDAR APP lost my email accounts and will not let me add them back. Also, Edge gets to the point of being useless very quickly when trying to browse the internet. I can browse the internet sometimes. But ALL browsers slow down to the point of being useless. I have replaced my hard drive, memory and network card. It is NOT hardware. It IS windows 10. The windows apps that don't work won't even let me uninstall them without jumping through hoops. By the way, I AM quite skilled with computers too. I have reinstalled the apps with powershell repeatedly.

Out of morbid curiosity, what form of connection to the internet do you have?

I discovered that the update service and apps work flawlessly in a Wi-Fi environment, OK in a wired environment, and are atrocious (to the point of not working at all) if connected using cellular access (AT&T/ Verizon/ Etc.).

Any other internet activity is just fine, just those two Win 10 functions - don't on cellular internet (or metered connections) regardless what you set on the devices tab.

I have DSL with 12Mbs connection. My computers, note: plural, that are not running windows 10 really rock on the internet. These computers don't have an SSD and the extra Memory that is in this windows 10 computer.

The windows 10 computer has 8GB RAM, 240GB SSD, 500GB extra HDD and a 1GB Ethernet card. The other computers have no where near this kind of specs and are running windows 7, and they run rings around this windows 10 pro computer.

The last update that windows 10 did locked apps such as calendar and mail so that they do NOT work and can't be uninstalled. They lost my accounts that I had in them and will NOT let me put them back.

I'm also having the same problems. I just (finally) downloaded windows 10 yesterday. I had 7. I've been trying to find everything and get the updates. I can go here, there, and everywhere with Firefox. But I can't log in to Microsoft to get updates, or Edge, or Skype, or for some reason I can't even log into Avast. It's all saying a problem with the internet connection. So, I would appreciate help with this. Otherwise I'll be going back to 7.

I finally reloaded or reset windows 10 but it is starting to hang again. My mail program worked again to add my accounts but I haven't used it much since I have been using Outlook.

Hi,

I understand the inconvenience caused.

I would suggest you to try the methods below and check if it helps:

Method 1: System Maintenance Troubleshooter

System Maintenance troubleshooter looks for unused files and shortcuts that you can clean up or remove so that your computer can run faster.

1. Type troubleshooting in the search bar and open it.

2. Click "view all" on the left pane.

3. Run the system maintenance troubleshooter and follow the on-screen instructions.

Method 2: Add a new account

I would suggest you to create a new user account and check if the issue persists. This will help us identify if this is a corrupted user account related issue.

Follow the steps given in the help article on how to create a new user account.

Let us know the result.
