Windows 10 blank black screen when computer is idle for some time

Hello community, I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10, but I have been having issues with windows 10. The biggest one is that when I left my computer running at night downloading or left idle at some point it goes to a blank black screen and the only thing that works is the pointer. I want to know how to fix this issue

I have:

core i7 2nd generation

8GB Ram

Nvidia GTX 560M

and all my drivers fully installed and updated

I never had a problem while using windows 7

Hello,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for posting your query.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused. I will assist you with the issue.

I appreciate if you could answer a question to narrow down the issue and to provide you better assistance.

Have you set any particular power scheme on your computer (sleep/hibernate)?

I suggest you to check the power scheme set on your computer, you may follow the below steps for the same.

  1. Right click on start menu and select control panel.

  2. In the control panel window, search for power options and click on it.

  3. In the left side, choose “when to turn off the display option” and then in the drop down list, select “turn off the display” to Never and “put the computer to sleep” to “Never

  4. Click on Apply changes to take effect.

  5. And also “choose when the computer sleeps” in the power option and then in the drop down list, select “turn off the display” to Never and “put the computer to sleep” to “Never”.

  6. Click on Apply changes to take effect.

Hope this information is helpful. For any further assistance on Windows, feel free to post your query on Microsoft Community Forum.

Thank you.

Hi,

Thank you for coming back to us with the current status.

To understand the issue better, I would like to know what is the make and model of the computer?

The issue you are facing could be due to the display adapter driver is outdated. Let’s try simple troubleshooting methods and check if this helps in resolving the issue.

Method 1.

I recommend you to uninstall/re-install the display driver and check if this helps.

  1. Press Windows key + X and select Device manager.

  2. Click and expand Display Adaptor, right click on device select “uninstall”.

  3. Restart the computer once it is uninstalled. It will automatically install the generic display driver.

Note: Make sure you download the updated display driver.

  1. Right-click on the setup file of the driver and select Properties.

  2. Select Compatibility tab.

  3. Check Run this program in Compatibility mode.

  4. Let the driver install and then check the functionality.

If the issue still persist, I suggest you to update the display driver by following the above steps. Skip step3 and right click on the device and click on update software.

If the issue still persist, try the below method.

Method 2.

I recommend you to go the computer manufacturer website and download the lasted updated display driver and install the same. If the available driver is not for Windows 10 try installing the driver in compatibility mode and check.

  1. Download the latest display driver from the manufacturer’s website.

  2. Right-click on the setup file of the driver and select Properties.

  3. Select Compatibility tab.

  4. Check Run this program in Compatibility mode.

  5. Let the driver install and then check the functionality.

Hope this helps. Keep posting us with the status we will be glad to help you.

Please clarify  these instructions - I couldn't follow them at all!

In step 2 you say uninstall the driver.

In step 3 you say that on restart the system will "automatically install the generic display driver".

But then you warn us "Make sure you download the updated display driver." When am I supposed to do this? (Do I actually have to do this before step 3)? From where? How do I recognise "the updated display driver" that I have to download?

Then there's another set of instruction steps 1-4. Why would I be seeing a driver setup file? Is this steps 4-7 in the same sequence, or something else?

I didn't get as far as the last bit, but that's not clear too:
"If the issue still persist, I suggest you to update the display driver by following the above steps. (Haven't I already done that? Which particular steps?) Skip step3 (which step 3? There are two.) and right click on the device and click on update software."

I do appreciate you offering to help, but I think it needs to be clearer to be helpful.
