Windows 10 alphanumeric character keys not recognised

Hi,

There was a post back in July 2020 about alphanumeric keys not being recognised by a Windows 10 PC and the user being unable to enter their password. The response to use the on-screen keyboard allowed access back to the PC.

I am having the same problem occurring intermittently - sometimes at login, or in the middle of using the laptop. No indication as to why. The enter, cursor, delete, backspace keys etc work - just not the alphanumeric keys. Restart does not cure it. Device manager does not indicate any issues with the keyboard or its drivers which are most up to date. Plugging in an external USB keyboard does not seem to work (first time it seemed to alllow typing on the external as well as laptop keyboard) but on subsequent occasions when the error has occurred, plugging in the USB keyboard has not fixed the issue. Eventually, it spontaneously resolves (well so far it has - although a variable length of time - occasionally the next day eventually).

Whilst the on-screen keyboard can get you out of trouble, it is clearly not a solution in the way that even an external or wireless keyboard might be.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I'm having the same problem as WI. This is not a hardware problem, at least not in my case, because all the alphanumeric keys work in some windows, e.g. some search windows on websites. I noticed that this problem started after some Windows updates in July. I'm now reversing those, one by one, to see if it helps. I'll keep you posted.

Regards, HA

Update - result of rolling back Windows updates from July 1st 2021 onwards.

I removed said Windows updates to check if they were responsible for the alpha-numeric keys malfunctioning intermittedly. The problem is still there, albeit less frequently. All Windows updates post July 1st have now been reinstalled. The keyboard always works after a reboot, but rebooting your PC for this issue 3-4 times a day is not a workable option. So, what to do? I really hope a solution to this problem is published soon!

Hi,

On my Dell Laptop, I uninstalled the keyboard drivers. Re-installation happened automatically on next boot up and the problem has not occurred since.
