Windows 10 abnormal CPU core 0 usage

Hey guys.

I tried everything that I could find online and no luck, so I'll try to explain my problem with details, maybe, just maybe someone can help me.

First of all I have an ASUS G56JK laptop with Core i7 4710HQ, 12GB of RAM and Nvidia GTX 850m 2GB, 250 GB Samsung Evo 850 SSD and 1TB HDD as HDDCADDY, Bluetooth and Wireless are Qualcomm Atheros and SoundCard is Realtek.

Anywho, I'm an old Fast Insider and fortunately with this heavy use my laptop never encounter any problem that I couldn't solve.

I had Build version 14342.1000 and recently installed couple of developing tools like Visual Studio and Android Studio and Qt, couple of days later out of nowhere, windows started to showing BSOD almost every five minutes with error Win32kfull.sys has stopped. with the system restarting every couple of minutes I gave up trying to fix it and did a clean install of windows 10 Build 10586. (I mean complete clean install with formatting drive C and stuff) after I updated the drivers I noticed my Performance tab of Task Manager, it was (is) like this in idle time:

Image

as you can see core 0 is almost on full load with every even core (core 2, 4, 6) working for no apparent reason. Yes I know it has 4 physical core and with hyper-threading it becomes 8 logical cores, whatever it is, it's not working properly.

but what process is using it? "System" and when I clicked the Open file location turns out it's the windows Kernel! In the 10586 build its name is System and compressed memory. with the help of ProcessExplorer I found out that the actual process is ACPI.sys that use the CPU on core 0.

I updated all drivers, downgraded them, used the OEM versions, other kind of apps. uninstalled them, no luck. in safe mode it's still there with a little less usage. I tried clean installing the windows that I downloaded from micosoft and right after the installation it was like that again.

So what do you think? what can cause this?

Hi,

Sorry to know that you had multiple issue with Windows 10 and had to reinstall twice to resolve the issue. I also appreciate the troubleshooting steps you have tried to resolve the issue. However you can check that CPU performance by knowing what background services are running to know that follow the steps below.

  • Right click on Taskbar and select Task Manager.
  • Click on Performance Tab and Click on Open resource monitor.
  • Tap or click on CPU tab.

Hope the above information is helpful to know the CPU usage. Do let us know if you need further assistance.

Thank you.

Hi,

Well first of all I didn't resolve the problem! I couldn't. I tried to reinstall different versions and in my last attempt I installed a Windows 7 x64,  and find out that it is still acting like this:

notice it's exactly right after the installation finished. Now I think it can only be a hardware problem! but which one? I have no clue.

And about the processes I found these two "System Interrupts" and "System" using almost 25 percent CPU when my system is idle. and there was no services using CPU.

Thanks for your reply.

Hi again,

(I RESOLVED THE ISSUE)

That's what I exactly thought when I saw the issue in Windows 7, it's hardware. After a little more tweaking found the source, the HDD, or to be more accurate HDD CADDY. A while ago (lot longer than I can relate this current issue with it) I bought a SSD for my laptop and a HDD CADDY and replaced my DVD-RW with the HDD. Apparently some laptops have power management issues with the CADDY (like problems with shut down/restart/sleep etc) and since my problem was with the ACPI.sys and it's about power management I thought maybe this is it. Then I noticed a very little switch on the CADDY right next to the SATA port, did a little googling and yes, it's for resolving this problem! The manufacturer did a very good job hiding it (and not even mentioning it on any manual!!!) so that no one can notice it, not until they got a problem with the damn CADDY :| !!!

I flipped the switch to the most right state and VOILA!, resolved the issue, it's good as new. It wasn't the Windows fault in the first place.

Annnyway, thanks.

P.S. : I can't mark my own post as an answer! this is an answer.
