Windows 10 (64 bit) Upgrade from Windows 7 (64 bit)

Will there be a patch to install Windows 10 64 bit on our older computers? I know about the 32 bit version being compatible, but the AMD Athlon cpu's were originally designed to run 64 bit applications. Most of the cpu's have more than enough power for the OS. I'm sure there are people with Intel cpu's that would like to update their systems as well. Windows 7 is about to lose its support in about a year (2020). Also, a lot of programs won't even install on a 32 bit OS.

The Brick (custom build):

MB: ASRock 939a785gmh/128m

CPU: AMD Athlon x2 4400+

GPU: ATI Radeon X1800 GTO

RAM: Patriot Performance DDR-400 (4x1 GB)

Storage: Hitachi 640 GB HDD (primary),

Seagate 250 GB HDD (secondary)

PSU: HP 300 watt (generic OEM)

Hi Truster. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

You would do a Clean Install of 64 bit Windows 10 following the illustrated steps in this link which compile the best possible Clean Install of Windows which will stay that way as long as you stick with the tools and methods given, has zero reported problems, and is better than any amount of money could buy: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

To create 64 bit Windows 10 Installation Media (if necessary on another PC) install the Media Creation Tool and follow the directions here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m.... Uncheck the box for Recommended Settings to choose the exact version and bit rate for the target PC only.

Insert media, boot it by powering up PC while pressing the BIOS Boot Menu Key here: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutor...

If the media won't boot you may need to enter BIOS/UEFI Setup (pressing key given in chart in link above) to turn off Fast Boot or Fast Startup first.

Choose the boot device as a UEFI device if offered, on second screen choose Install Now, then Custom Install, then at the drive selection screen delete all partitions down to Unallocated Space to get it cleanest, click Next to let it create needed partitions and start install - this makes it foolproof.

You will get and keep the best possible install to the exact extent you stick with the steps, tools and methods in the linked tutorial. It's a better install than any amount of money could buy and a great learning experience that will make you the master of your PC because you will learn everything that works best and how to apply it with your own hands.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

I did try installing a clean version of Windows 10 (64). The OS won't install on a AMD Athlon x2 4400+ CPU because the older AMD CPU's don't support "compareexchange128". That's why I was asking if there will be a patch for the 64-bit version. Even if it has only limited support. It's an older computer, but it still runs fine and can run mining programs at 64-bit. Pretty much all mining programs only work on a 64-bit OS.

I've not heard of a patch to enable this. It's up to the PC manufacturer and unless they have a virtual uprising on their hands they really don't work backwards, since they want us to buy new hardware.

There are some interesting discussions about the limitation which apparently stretches back to Windows 8:

I agree, of course they want us to buy new hardware. Which I have already bought 2 newer computers that are both running Windows 10 (64). And yes, I can try to ask AMD and ASRock if they would be willing to release driver/firmware updates for some of their older hardware. Honestly what really bothers me is that the 32-bit OS will install, but the 64-bit wont. Changing over to 32-bit pretty much makes the system useless. Most newer software requires a 64-bit OS. Microsoft was able to release a 32-bit version that works, but not a 64-bit. What's the point? If anything should have gone out first, it should have been the 32-bit version. I'm sure Microsoft is more than capable of releasing a version or a patch to bypass the 128-bit compare/exchange feature for older hardware. I mean seriously, why make a version that will run obsolete 32-bit systems, but limit genuine 64-bit systems from upgrading.

I guess we will see what happens. A lot of companies are still running Windows 7 because they don't want to buy or can't afford all new hardware. Especially when there is nothing wrong with the hardware they have. I know a lot of people are going to be upset when the support for Windows 7 goes out. I guess older systems will just have to switch to Linux or some other OS.

Thank you for the help though, I'm sure we will see what happens in the near future. If I hear anything I will come back and post it on this forum.
