Windows 10 1903 (may update) Breaks Night Light (built in night light mode)

Hi there,

I have 2 machines (1 was an upgrade install to 1903 the other was a clean install).  Both nvidia cards, 1080ti and a 2080 in the other (1 has the latest nvidia drivers the other has the very last version prior to the latest).  Both intel 8700k processors.

what is happening:  i keep the night light mode always on, and prior to 1903 (when i was using 1809), when i play a game (full screen) the nightlight mode would turn off in game.  when i alt tab to windows, night light was enabled.  when i jumped back into a game, it was disabled.  no issues.

when i upgraded to 1903 (both the clean install machine and the upgrade), when i have night light on, and go in game and alt tab, the night light remains off in windows, this never happened in 1809.

not limited to games, but in both machines using 1903, sometimes when i start the computer, the night light mode is disabled.  trying to turn it on does nothing, and rebooting fixes it.  but if happens enough now where i suspect this is not a one off, and the fact it happens on both my computers, and when i go back to 1809 there are no issues.

i also tried flux, but it did the same thing where it would sometimes when you turn on the computer be off, and no way to enable it without rebooting.

lastly, i noticed when the display goes to sleep (the monitor, not the computer), night light is disabled.  You can turn it back on, but the monitor being put to sleep effectlivley disabled night light mode from running on 1903, but not on 1809.

somehow i think this is all connected, something in 1903 with night light mode is not working properly like it did in 1809.

computer stats:

Machine 1 (upgrade to 1903):

Hi Windward,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

We understand the difficulty you are facing with the feature of Windows and in your gaming experience. We also truly appreciate the time and effort that you have taken to work on this issue. However, we would recommend you to try following steps mentioned below and check if it resolves the issue.

Registry Disclaimer: The registry is a database in Windows that contains important information about system hardware, installed programs and settings, and profiles of each of the user accounts on the computer. Windows often reads and updates the information in the registry.

Normally, software programs make registry changes automatically. You should not make unnecessary changes to the registry. Change registry files incorrectly can cause Windows to stop working or make Windows report the wrong information.

Important: This section, method or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, backup the registry before you modify it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.

1. Press Windows + R keys.

2. Type Regedit in the text bar and press Enter.

3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CloudStore\Store\Cache\DefaultAccount.

4. Under DefaultAccount, right click on $$windows.data.bluelightreduction.bluelightreductionstate and choose Delete.

5. Right click on $$windows.data.bluelightreduction.settings and choose Delete.

6. Then close the Registry and restart the computer to complete the process.

hi there, thanks for the suggestion.  unfortantley that didnt do anything.  i had both values in the registry, both were empty though.  i deleted them like you said, and rebooted.  but same thing, when i booted up, blue light was on (which is normal), but when going into a fullscreen game, then alt tabbing out, blue light was then disabled.  in 1809, on both my 1809 machines, when i alt tab to windows from a full screen game, windows night light mode was enabled.  but in 1903, it is disabled if you go into a full screen game and exit.  you dont have to alt tab, just exit the game normally and when you get back to windows desktop, blue light is off, when it was on prior to launching the game.

I've the same issue on my sandy bridge 2011 model laptop with no second graphics, only has the intel built in graphics hd3000 on the i7-2....  cpu.

I put a note in the feedback hub a while back.  There are lots of reports of nite lite problems with 1903 there now.

For me, I only had the two $$windows.data... located under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CloudStore\Store\DefaultAccount\Current.

I just deleted the Binary values named "DATA" under each, rebooted and now night light works correctly.

edit - Forgot to mention, after reboot, the keys were automatically renamed to remove the $$

with the new cumulative update that went out earlier this week for 1903 (update KB4497935), that fixed my night light issues.  so i suspect this issue is now solved!

thanks microsoft for fixing it.

nevermind, i rebooted and nightlight stopped working again on 1903, so this is not fixed yet.

This worked for me.

I didn't have these keys in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CloudStore\Store\Cache

but I removed entire Cache folder and it worked after restart.

ive been using 1903 for a few weeks now, and wanted to follow up that if you disable fast boot, then nightlight works fine.  since i disabled fastboot, i have had no problems with 1903 and night light.  never had to mess with the registry or anything.

if you all are on 1903 and having issues, just disable fast boot through power options, and you should be good provided you have all the latest updates as a cumulultive update from a few weeks ago fixed some of the remaining bugs with night light (except the fast boot bug).

Had the same issue untill today.

Cumulative update  KB4503293 (June 11, 2019) fixed night light mode for me.

upd: nevermind, after several reboots nightlight broke again. Fast boot is an issue.

upd 2: Microsoft finally fixed it with new update on 27.06.2019. Works even with fast boot.

I think it may be related to NVIDIA Control Panel settings.

If you try to use NVIDIA's color settings rather then other applications, it seems like this issue persists.

I've managed to resolve this by using 'other applications' color settings or reverting to the previous Windows build.

Hope this helps and they can get it fixed.
