Windows 10 1809 update "Undoing changes"

I recently got the update installer for Windows 10 version 1809 and once it installed, it would restart then go to the updating windows screen. It would get about 15-16% done then it would restart. Upon rebooting, under the loading circle it would say undoing changes. I tried installing the update twice and both times it said undoing changes. After checking winver, it still said it was on version 1803. If you could possibly help me figure out what went wrong, that would be awesome! Thanks!

Hi,
Please disable developer mode and attempt the upgrade again
, Error SP CAddPackage::DoExecute: Failed to add package Add [1] package C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\DUImageSandbox\Microsoft-OneCore-DeveloperMode-Desktop-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~.cab. Error: 0x800F081F
This is somewhat known as people are reporting this widely and disabling developer mode would resolve this.
Sumit

I had to uninstall Developer Mode Package from Apps & Features (optional features), then the update passed. After selecting Developer Mode in settings, it installed the package back again.

Hi,

I had the same issue, It use to restart the PC once it reaches 17% and Undo the changes. I tried everything but didn't work. Then i tried using media creation tool, in this i used "Update this PC now". I got the same issue but this time i got a error message saying Windows 10 October 2018 v1809 Update Installation failed Error 0x800F081F-0x20003.

If you are getting the same error message then its really simple to fix.

Step: - 1. Disable Developer Mode.

1. Go to Settings > Update and Security

2. Go to For developers > and check "Sideload apps"

3. Click Yes at Turn on app sideloading? message.

4. Continue to Step-2

Step: - 2. Uninstall the Windows Developer Package.

1. Go to Settings > Apps.

2. Go to Apps & features > Click on Manage Optional Features.

3. Select Windows Developer Mode and click Uninstall.

4. Restart your computer.

5. Install the windows 10 October 2018 Update.

Note: - After updating your PC to windows 10 (v1809), Developer mode can be re-enable again if you need it.

Several times during the last few weeks the update of my Samsung ATIV Book8 880Z5E laptop (purchased 2014) ended in Windows 10 1809 update "Undoing changes" and reverted to version 1803.  The updates in some cases lasted almost seven hours.  Almost always they ended at about 85% completion.

Samsung ATIV Book8 specifications:

Processor:                            Intel Core i7-3635QM CPU @ 2.40 Ghz

System type:                        64-bit

Installed RAM:                     8 GB

Hard drive:                          1 TB mechanical drive

Display adapter (2):            AMD Radeon HD8700M series

                                             Intel HD Graphics 4000

Display type:                       Touchscreen

Operating system:               Windows 10 Home

I tried and repeated many of the following steps with no success:

Automatic update

Update via the Windows Update Assistant

Manual update: Downloaded and ran the standalone executable

Ran the Win 10 Update Troubleshooter

Renamed the Windows Update Folder

Ran the DISM & SFC tools

It was not until I saw the post here by GaneshNag that I could solve the issue.  Updating with the “Upgrade this PC now” selection of the Windows MediaCreationTool provided me with the necessary error information.  The generated error was:

Error: 0x8007042B-0x4000D

The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation

Based upon information in other forum discussions (e.g., Windows 10 Anniversary Update Error Code 0x8007042B-0x4000D) my first try was to uninstall my Webroot SecureAnywhere antivirus software (Windows Defender disabled).  That solved the problem.  I then used the Windows Update Assistant to install the 1809 version.  After about 90 minutes of downloading and getting the updates ready, the installation took only 50 minutes of additional time.  What a relief!

Additional note:  My desktop computer, also using SecureAnywhere, did not encounter this error and was updated with no problem; however, it does use Windows 10 Pro rather than the Windows 10 Home edition on my laptop.

Desktop specifications (2016 build):

Processor:                Intel Core i7-6700K CPU @ 4.00 GHz

System type:            64-bit

Mother board:         Gigabyte GA-Z170X-GAMING

Installed Ram:         Corsair 2x16GB (32GB) DDR4 SDRAM

Hard drives (2):       NVME 500GB Samsung 950

                                2TB WD mechanical

Display adapter:     EVGA GeForce 970

I greatly appreciate the help that GaneshNag, this and other forums have provided.

Step: - 2. Uninstall the Windows Developer Package.

1. Go to Settings > Apps.

2. Go to Apps & features > Click on Manage Optional Features.

I would just like to add when I went into Apps and Features there was no option for 'Manage Option Features'.  Upon doing a search for that text, it did pop up the option for it though and I was able to uninstall the Developer Package.

I’ve had this twice with different updates.

Both were a bad disk. Run smart test - failed.
