Window XP Mode/Virtual PC download site won't download the Virtual PC file.

I have Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate. It's been validated successfully. I need Windows XP to run a small, old program that's not compatiable with Windows 7. Found this site:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

Was able to download/install the Windows XP Mode (500MB) without any problems. Clicked on the second button, it downloaded the update file. I went ahead and installed that. But the second button on that site will ONLY download the update file (again), not Windows Virtual PC.

I tried launching Windows XP Mode, got this error notice: "Cannot start Windows Virtual PC Host Process." Obviously I dont' ahve Windows Virtual PC.

Is there an alternative site that works that will allow me to download and install the Windows Virtual PC file needed with Window XP Mode for Windows 7?

Thanks.

Download the three files you need on a different computer and transfer them to that computer.

Here's exhaustive instructions I recently posted for this process in a Windows 7 x64 case:

The web page you are visiting is...
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

... you have (using Internet Explorer) chosen: "Ultimate 64-bit" in the first drop-down and "English" in the second drop-down.

You then get three links to click on.

"Windows XP Mode" (first)
"Windows Virtual PC" (second)
"Windows XP Mode update" (third)

You click on the first one.  Continue for the validation, you allow the file to download and select to RUN the file.  Watch for any yellow bars and allow things to download/run.  It should eventually run and tell you:
"Windows validation was successful

Now you can take advantage of all the value genuine Windows provides, including extras like Windows XP Mode and Microsoft Security Essentials! Press the Continue button below to proceed to your download."
And you click Continue.  Then you choose to *SAVE* the 469MB file "WindowsXPmode_en-us.exe" someplace where you can locate it and run it later.  In your case - not knowing your Internet connectivity - I would suggest letting it finish before doing the next step...  Click on the second button and *SAVE* the "Windows6.1-KB958559-x64.msu" to the same location.  Still not knowing your internet connectivity information - I would again wait until that download finishes before continuing...  Click on the third button and *SAVE* the "Windows6.1-KB977206-x64.msu" to the same location.

Now you have the three files, this is what you do.

Close everything.  Reboot.  Log in as an administrative user.

Go to the saved file location and right-click on the first file ("WindowsXPmode_en-us.exe") and choose "Run as Administrator".  If it requests the administrator's password/permission - give it, it may/may not depending on your setup (may take a few seconds to get to that.)  Click "Next", Click "Next", Wait while it copies/extracts the virtual hard disk 'image', click "Finish".

Go to the saved file location and double-click on the second file ("Windows6.1-KB958559-x64.msu").  You *do* want to install the update ("Yes") and you should "Accept" the agreement.  This may take a little time.  Restart when it asks.

Log in as an administrative user.

Go to the saved file location and double-click on the third file ("Windows6.1-KB977206-x64.msu").  You *do* want to install the update ("Yes") and you should "Accept" the agreement.  This may take a little time.  Restart when it asks.

Test it out.

I carefully read, printed and absorbed your elaborate response to becWin7. My problem being identical, I applied every step, carefully, as you instructed. Managed all the downloads (finally) into my 'Downloads' directory. Went to open the XP Mode, only to be advised that it had already been installed.

Tried to open the two KB files and got the same messages for both:"Not appllicable for this computer" Thanks a lot, MS !!

FYI: my brand-new desktop came with Win7 Home installed. So I could take advantage of the well-advertised alternative of being abale to run some XP Pro programs etc,. I purchased the additional upgrade to Win7 Ultimate. I am no wiz-bang expert, but have loads of logic - now my HEAVY investment in MS software has come to a point of HALT!

What can you suggest above and beyond cursing to solve my problem. Getting rather upset - and frustrated!! "Virtual PC" or any similar mention is absent from my "All programs" listing in the START key---

You know what you're doing! Please help me out and thanks for your input!!!

Please verify your Windows 7 Edition and architecture using the following:

Start button --> RUN --> type in:
(No "RUN", press the Windows_Key+R at the same time.)
  winver
--> Click OK.

That will give you (picture at top) the full name of the operating system.
That will give you (in the text) the Service Pack you have installed.

Please post your results here in response to this message.

Know that the instructions were for those with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  If you have something else - the instructions may vary.

XP Mode is only supported on W7 Pro or above. It is NOT supported on XP Home.

Download it from Microsoft Download Center (requires WGA check):

I am trying to set up Window XP Mode/Virtual PC.  The download site won't download the Virtual PC file

Windows6.1-KB977206-x64.msu .  It only offers the Windows6.1-KB977206-x64-RefreshPkg.msu and Windows6.1-KB977206-x86-RefreshPkg.msu files.

I tried the link above and it gives the same 2 RefreshPkg files.  Where can I get the Windows6.1-KB977206-x64.msu file?

Running Win 7 Pro, 64 bit.

If you actually have a system that doesn't have hardware assisted virtualization running Windows 7 x64, you will need to install this patch:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=6906
(Most people should not need this.  Here is a link to the direct download for the 64-bit version.)

For 64-bit Windows 7 with SP1, download this:
Windows XP Mode
(Save it and then run/install it.)

Then this...

Windows Virtual PC 64-bit

(Save it and then run/install it.)

Read through this and follow the directions about installing & using Windows XP Mode...
