Why won't Windows detect my display?

I changed it from duplicate to extended display and my monitor flashed and then one of my screens is no longer detected. win+ p doesn't work, win + I doesn't help. Display settings wont detect the second monitor. I checked and all connections on the motherboard are in order, its plugged in correctly, the monitor has power. nothing changed from when it was working 5 minutes ago.

Hello! My name is Renzo and welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm sorry to hear that you are experiencing this issue and I'll be happy to help you out.

May I know if you have tried changing cables to connect to the monitor? Have you checked for any missing Windows Updates?

In the meantime, I suggest you try to reinstall the display driver in your computer.

1. Press Windows Key + X then click on Device Manager
2. On View Tab, click Show Hidden Devices
3. Click the drop down for the Display Adapter
4. Find the grayed out/marked x driver or the display driver > Right click then "Update Driver"
5. Click on "Browse my computer for drivers"
6. Click on "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer"
7. Choose a later/different driver and click Next
8. Restart your computer and test if you have the same issue.

Let me know the results. Thank you

I checked. Doesn’t work with other cables but works with other devices. I did a full reset of windows and installed updated drivers for everything. No windows updates.

i don’t have any hidden or grayed out display adapters. What I have is a hidden monitor in the device manager, but it’s just stating the same monitor that is displaying once grayed out once not. I dont have any other drivers installed I tried searching for monitor drivers and installed what asus says are the most up to date (2017) but when searching for drivers under the hidden monitor it says what was already installed was what worked.

Got it and I understand. Thanks for trying that out. If you already reset Windows and wiping everything off, it should work if it's a software issue. Unless the reset did not remove everything.

My suggestion is to check if this might be caused by a 3rd party application / a corrupted service on your computer.

To isolate this, you can try restarting your computer in a clean boot state. This will disable all 3rd party applications while retaining the only necessary software for your computer to run. If the issue persist during the clean boot state, that means your operating system or a hardware is causing the issue.

To do the clean boot state, follow the steps in this link. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-t...

If problem doesn't occur in this state, on the clean boot instructions, enable applications 1 by 1 or in 2's to isolate the issue. Remove or repair the application when it occurs after enabling it. Thank you.

I just went through with the clean boot and the system restarted. Second monitor still won’t detect.

It should be mentioned I have had this issue before. I took it in thinking it was a motherboard issue and had the motherboard replaced. Got home and installed the new motherboard and I was still having the same issue. I reinstalled windows when the motherboard wasn’t the solution and it worked. I also had an issue on Friday where the same thing happened but I got a notification that AMD crash detector detected a display driver crash and went into safe boot and I would need to restart to fix the issue which ultimately resolved the issue.

Now it’s acting the way it did the first time. But reinstalling windows hasn’t worked, the clean boot didn’t work, but the monitor still works for other devices. So like, am I just supposed to assume that changing from duplicate display to extend display blows up my motherboard?

I understand and it shouldn't be a problem if you're just changing the setting. Have you checked if the problem persist on a different profile as well?

1. Click the Start button and select Settings.
2. Choose Accounts from the left menu.
3. Select Family & other users.
4. Click Add account under “Other users.”
5. Follow the prompts to add a Microsoft account or create a local account. (I suggest you create a local account for test purposes)

Once you created an account, log out of your current profile and test if you get the same issue on the other profile. If yes, you might need support from your computer's motherboard manufacturer as there might be compatibility problem.

That didn’t work either. I’m also running into another funny issue where I have my time set to automatically adjust, set to eastern time (NY) and it’s showing 3 hours ahead.

Might clearing cmos help?
