Why wont my CD/DVD drive read DVDs?

I built a new machine 6 months ago running windows 10, all new components bar the two optical drives which I took from my old machine and were working flawlessly up until then.

The drives are 6-7 years old.

They read audio CDs ok, all be it a little slow to recognise them at first.  But if I put in a movie DVD the drive spins up and then nothing, it won't recognise that a disc is inserted.  If I right-click > open the drive I get a message asking to insert a disc.

Drivers are up to date, both drives perform exactly the same.  Any ideas?

There is a recent issue with DVD players and Microsoft MPEG-2 handling libraries so try installing KB4015438 which fixes the issue:
