Why is Windows 10 not activated after upgraded from Windows 7 Home Basic?

I have just upgraded an old PC in my office from Windows 7 Home Basic to Windows 10. But then the Windows have become not activated. Previously before the upgrade, my Windows 7 Home Basic was active. When I tried to activate Windows 10, it gave me the error code 0xC004F213. What should I do to re-activate my Windows?

Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

You have just missed the opportunity to upgrade for free from Windows 7 to 10, on the 20th of September, Microsoft finally closed the loophole that allowed a Windows 7 or 8 product key to upgrade for free to Windows 10 or 11 which was meant to officially end in 2016, that is now no longer possible.

My question to you is what upgrade path did you take?

Did you use the Windows Media Creation Tool?

If not i would suggest doing so.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Select Create windows 10 media installation.

Download the tool.

Install the tool.

Follow the steps on creating the Windows Media onto a USB Flash Drive.

Make sure that the clean USB Flash Drive that you use is 16 Gigabytes.
Using the tool to create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) to install Windows 10 on a different PC (click to show more or less information)

Follow these steps to create installation media (USB flash drive or DVD) you can use to install a new copy of Windows 10, perform a clean installation, or reinstall Windows 10.

If your Windows 7 installation was 32 bit then create a 32 bit edition.

If your Windows 7 installation was 64 bit then create a 64 bit edition.

You mentioned that you had Windows 7 Home Basic.

(After the Media is created, you will have to shut down the computer and restart it taking note to tap the F11 Key or the Key that is associated with your particular computer in relations to Boot Menu before windows appears to access the Boot from Menu to start the installation).

Different computers use different Keys to bring up the Boot Menu Order.

Such as F8, F9, F10, F11, F12.

You will need to use the right one.

Once your Media is created and you boot from the USB Flash Drive i would select Windows 10 Home.

On a side note.

Windows 10 will continue to work without activation.

It just won't let you personalize with desktop backgrounds, colors and other items under Personalization settings.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards.

Hi Jitendra,

This was announced some time ago. there is no way to activate your windows 10 using a windows 7 key anymore see here https://www.indiatoday.in/technology/news/story/windows-7-8-users-can-no-longer-upgrade-to-windows-11-for-free-here-is-why-2448107-2023-10-12

I believe the same restriction will stop you activating windows 10 using a windows 7 product key as pointed out by DaveM121 above
