Why is sign in ID different that the one in my Microsoft account?

I have recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 10. After signing in with my existing credentials, everything seemed fine.

A week later, I signed in and the display name is different than what I chose. I don't recognize it.

I followed the recommended procedure on Microsoft's help pages for changing my ID name but it is still the unfamiliar name when I sign in. But my account information shows the new name I chose. (https://www.windowscentral.com/how-change-account-name-windows-10-sign-screen).

Please advise. I don't want to go to all the trouble of changing my entire account to accommodate what should be an easy and foolproof method in the first place.

In fact, I changed my email name awhile ago but it's showing my old name. Confused.

Thank you.

Hello,

Try changing name via User Accounts window (run netplwiz command to get this). User name usually has 2 properties called User name and Full name, make sure you have changed both to get updated name reflected everywhere in the system. Also, reboot the system after this change.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

Seems that you are having issues with the login credential of the user account on your PC. Let me help you in the right direction.

Now to use your Windows 10 PC, you need to create a User Account. A User Account can be of two type: Local User Account & Microsoft User Account.

A Local user account is for a child or someone else who doesn't have a Microsoft account. If needed, you can give that account administrator permissions. An offline account is just another term for a local account. In such account you can set up a username and password of your own or just a username without a password, which suffice your requirement.

For more information, refer this article: Create a local user or administrator account in Windows 10

A Microsoft user account is for a child or someone else who have a Microsoft email account. If needed, you can give that account administrator permissions. An online account is just another term for a Microsoft account. In such account you need to sign in to the user account using the Microsoft Email account credentials that you have setup in Microsoft Account portal

We would like to know few things.

·       Did you sign-in initially as Local User Account or Microsoft User Account?

·       What account is it showing on the Settings page under Accounts > Your Info?

·       Are you aware of any changes on the PC prior to this issue?

·       What login credential you prefer: Local/Microsoft Account?

Let us know if you have any query, we will certainly assist you further.

Thank you for your help.

When I followed your instructions, the Full Name did indeed have the incorrect ID. I changed the Full Name to the name I wanted. I then entered my password as instructed and rebooted as instructed.

Windows did not fully reboot but gave me the screen to enter my PIN. The window showed the new name. But as soon as I entered the PIN, the name switched back to the old incorrect one and opened Windows.

Nothing changed after all.

(I originally selected the option in Netplwiz to bypass the password and keep it that way.)
