Why do my jpg now have a .dcm extension?

Why do my photos that are in the cloud have a .dcm extension? I am unable to open them without downloading a third party software. I have tried to remove the .dcm extension only to lose the photo completely. I have tried opening them online and nothing happens.

Hello MICHAEL,

Good to see you in Microsoft Community.

Which cloud do you upload the jpg images to, OneDrive, Google Drive or others?

A DCM file is an image file saved in the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) image format. It stores a medical image, such as a CT scan or ultrasound, and may also include patient information to pair the image with the patient. DCM files may also be saved as .DICOM files. This type of file needs to be opened with specialized image viewer software, and Microsoft Photos built-in Windows may not support this format.

If you confirm that you were uploading .jpg files, but they all have a .dcm extension added after uploading, you can download these files and use PowerToys PowerRename utility for Windows | Microsoft Learn to batch change the file extension.

If this exception occurs multiple times and in different files, I suggest you contact the cloud provider for further technical support, as they would be the best resource to provide you with specific guidance and solutions for their product.

If anything is unclear, please do not hesitate to let me know.
