Why do I need to turn off filter keys to allow keys to repeat.

I accidentally pressed the shift key for more than 8 seconds. After I did this, my keyboard would not repeat when I press and hold down a key.

Changing the repeat delay or the repeat rate does not fix this. Rebooting doesn't wprk.

I found that Jim Boston's solution in the following link did work:

See https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/keyboard-will-not-repeat/6626697f-00a2-43dc-95bb-936c3cf4d2bf

This is obviously a bug in Windows and has been there for at least 11 years! It has probably driven hundreds of thousands of people crazy over the years. When will you fix it?

Hello Michael. I'm Greg, here to help you with this.

Here is a fuller explanation of what filter keys do in Windows:
https://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/what-are-filter...

Sensitive keys can cause keys to repeat, also it is a disability issue for some, so they have it available to set or disable like you found,.

If you want to express your opinion on this you may be able to help Microsoft improve this product/feature by using the Feedback Hub in Start Menu. While they will not see it here, Microsoft developers DO read feedback from customers that comes in via the Feedback Hub, so that is a great way to share your thoughts on how to better serve you as a customer.

There are other keyboard fixes that might also work if you want to go over all of them here:

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back, I will have other suggestions if necessary.

Thanks for your reply Greg. One of the suggestions was to change the language to a different one and change it back again to reset to the default keyboard settings, but this does not fix it.

This is not just a disability feature, it is a bug. If it was a "feature" and not a bug, the

Control panel => Keyboard settings would show that the repeat rate has been changed to 0 and I could change it back, but it still shows the repeat rate as fast so changing it doesn't do anything.

There is no hint anywhere that the repeat rate has surruptitiously, behind the scenes, been set to 0. I think there must be a registry setting somewhere that "knows" it has been changed, but none of the people who have had the problem have ever found it.

364 people have upvoted Jim Boston's solution. Think how many more didn't go back to upvote and how many more users never found it and had to restore their system or are are just struggling along with no ability to use repeating keys.

It almost makes me weep to think of the wasted man hours and frustration for tens of thousands, maybe even millions of users.

Regards and thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Michael, thanks for pointing out this bug. I would report it in Feedback Hub app in Start Menu (press Windows key + F) where developers are tasked to respond to consumer feedback. They will not even see it here.
