Why do I keep getting the same error code after downloading Windows 10 on my computer?

I just purchased Windows 10 from the Microsoft store a few hours ago. I was recently running Windows 7 and needed an upgrade to run new programs. After purchasing and downloading the program, it would not install. I tried several times to install it but it kept giving me the error code: 0x80072F8F-0x2000. I then learned that I needed to download another piece that was called Microsoft EasyFix. I installed that "update" and then restarted my computer. I then went back to the downloads and tried to install Windows 10 again, but it continues to give me the same error code. I am on the verge of just buying a whole new computer with Windows 10 or 11 already installed and then request a refund of my recent purchase. What do I need to do?

Hello VernonVaughn,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community and I'll be glad to assist you today.

This error - 0X80072F8F - 0X20000 - can occur due to various reasons, such as security software installed on your computer, background applications running, or issues with your hard drive.

If your Windows 7 PC has good hardware specifications, you can consider upgrading to Windows 10. However, please note that support for Windows 10 will end in October 2025. Therefore, if your device is not eligible for Windows 11, purchasing a Windows 10 license now may not be the best choice.

If your existing device meets all the minimum system requirements for Windows 11, you can install Windows 10 using a bootable USB installation media drive. This process will completely reinstall Windows on your hard drive, so make sure to back up all your files before proceeding with the reinstallation. Later, you can upgrade to Windows 11.

You can find the "Windows 11 minimum system requirements" here:

If your device does not meet specific requirements like TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot, you can return the Windows 10 product purchased from the Microsoft Store and consider buying a new PC that comes with Windows 11 pre-installed, allowing you to run your programs on the latest version.

I hope this information helps. If you have any questions, please let me know and I will be happy to help you further.

Best regards,

Gunasekar N
