Why do I have to press the power button twice to start Windows, now?

Hi

For the last couple of days, I have noted when I let the laptop hibernate, if I try to start it, it gets stuck a moment later with the Samsung Logo & not even the rotating dots appear. I have to press the power button again to turn it off, which makes a mockery of hibernation & whatever was saved and then when I press it again, is when it starts normally.

I have tried to look at some solutions, including in the post http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-performance/why-do-i-have-to-switch-on-my-computer-twice-to/5cb3d14e-4505-4e1d-881d-026ad22b7b83 ...

where one is supposed to turn off fast boot, ... which does NOT help in my case.

I tried running troubleshooting for hardware from the control panel, but it also did not help. It only noted a deliberately disabled blue tooth adapter, which I saw no point of turning on as I think it has nothing to do with this & then had to restart.

I also did troubleshooting for POWER, which identified too high brightness setting  for the screen, which cannot be the cause, because I use settings to maximize battery usage which automatically reduce brightness, BUT even if not I personally use a low brightness.

The PC has a clean installation of Windows 10 (recently because of HDD failure, had to use image backup to get it on another) & was working properly, until I noticed this issue of not waking up from hibernation & the subsequently noting I had to press the power button twice to start it.

I frequently use hibernation & had b´never had a problem with it.

Windows 10 & ALL drivers are up-to-date, at least according to iObit Driver Booster 3 pro & I have no reason to feel they are not.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Hello,

Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

This issue may occur due to corrupt or incorrect power settings. I suggest you to follow the below method and check if it helps.

Method 1: Reset and restore the power plans to default and check the status of this issue.

1. Click “Windows Key + X”, and then click on command prompt.

2. In the command prompt, type powercfg –restoredefaultschemes and hit Enter.

3. Exit command prompt.

Note: This would reset the power plan settings to default. Any previously customized power plans would be removed.

Hope the information helps. Do reply if you need further assistance, we will be happy to help you.

Thank you.

Hi there

Thank you for the response.

I did use the suggested method, in fact twice, but it not unfortunately help.

After pressing the power button when the PC is in hibernation mode, it still gets stuck with the initial Samsung symbol & it stays like that as long as one does nothing UNTIL you press the button again, which switches it off. It is only after a second push of the power button that it starts, normally.

After the initial upgrade from win 8.1 to 10, I have done for a number of reasons several clean installs. The latest at end of 2015 & on Dec. 31 saved a system image. After that. because of some unrelated issue, i got an HDD failure as mentioned about 2 weeks ago, bought a new HDD & used the image to restore it.

It had been working with no problem until as i said, I noted the hibernation issue.

I also need to say I have always used the Samsung battery setting, of making the battery only charge to 80% to elongate battery life it had never been a problem before. It comes from a Samsung program made for Win 8 BUT has always worked under Win 10.

I have not changed any power settings otherwise & only manually use the F keys to lower the brightness when using the battery.

Before, submitting this, I manually disabled the hibernation setting via the Cpanel & re-enabled it again, but it did not also help.

I also turned Fastboot back on, since turning it off did not help as mentioned in initial post & it was not a problem before in the time I have used Win 10 since September.

Quite strange.

What could I try next?

Thank you in advance.

 Hello Arul_D

I assumed you would turn back & check out the feedback to your recommendation, which I and another user have responded to, 8 days back, if I am not mistaken .....

I have in the meantime tried to use sfc /scannow & DISM Scanhealth command, ... no problem found.

Trying to repair Startup using repair tools on USB stick has failed a few times. The error log saved in System32\LogFiles\Srt has several results of tests performed, as much as I can see all "Completed successfully" & at the end:

Root cause found: => Boot status indicates that the OS booted succesfully.

I hope we can be helped, because for a number of issues raided in this forum of late, including Startmenu disappearing, etc, all suggested solutions after getting a response with 1, 2 Methods, & no further follow up,  I have been forced to re-install Windows to solve them.

Your help would very much be appreciated.

Regards

I also have the same problem with my Samsung laptop since last month and I have no idea why I started having this issue. No updates were installed when this problem appeared. Whenever I start my laptop from hibernate or shutdown (with fast startup enabled), my laptop will show the Samsung logo with the circle of white dots for a few seconds then shuts itself down. Sometimes, I would hear a sound as if something stopped spinning inside my laptop. I have to press the power button again to start it from cold boot. It boots up normally if I wake it up from sleep or from restart.

I tried disabling/re-enabling hibernation and fast startup. It works but this is just like starting from a cold boot, which is significantly slower. I want these features enabled without causing any startup problems. I used troubleshooting tool for power (no issues were found), checked if there are any updates for my drivers from the manufacturer (all are up-to-date), and tried sfc /scannow command (no problems were found). I always check the reliability history and event viewer whenever this happens but these can't point out the cause of this issue.

I hope a solution comes up soon.

The solution that worked with me is as follows:

1- Open Windows 10 Power options

2-On the left side panel click on " Choose what the power buttons do"

3-Click on change settings that are currently unavailable

4-Then go down to Shutdown settings and remove the Tick mark on "Turn on fast startup"

I believe this should solve your problem as it has worked with me....Good Luck
