Why are my AOL settings out of date?

I click on the little envelope at the bottom of the screen, and go to settings, manage accounts, and AOL, which I added yesterday. I repeatedly enter the password and it still tells me it can't access my email. I'm sure it's the right password even if I can't see it. I get an annoying alert after time has passed telling me to fix my account settings.

This doesn't make any sense. How would going to outlook.com change anything? The problem is when I click on the little envelope, which is not related to a web site.

Hello, I’m Virginia an independent advisor with 20 years of expertise in fixing my own & friends’ PC problems.
That error usually indicates that the account requires a more secure email client than it is being used on. To fix this you'll need to activate two-factor authentication under your AOL account online then create an app specific password & use this within the email client instead of the account password.

That won't work for me because it appears to require a cell phone.

Unfortunately this may be the only way you can continue to receive emails via the Mail app or Outlook. You can try this:
Log in to your AOL mail account, and go to Options>Account Info.
Click on Account Security on the left menu and enable ‘Allow less secure apps’ to On.
Then retry sending & receiving emails.

I don't seem to have that option. Anyway, all I wanted was for my computer to let me know when I got an AOL email. I can always just remember to check my email.

Sorry to hear that you don’t have that option.
You could try a different email client or visit the webmail version to view your mails.

Like I said, I just check my email the way I always did. I type aol.com.
