Why am I hearing noise through my headphones when nothing's playing?

This only happens when I'm using my school's computer, but I hear it every time I plug in my headphones. It's like there's a radio app on the computer or something. The sounds are too faint for me to make out what they're about, although sometimes I can hear voices. The volume of the noises doesn't change even when I adjust it on the computer, but they do go away if I mute it.

Is anyone able to explain why this is happening to this one computer and how I can shut it off? It's really annoying to listen to music or watch a video and hear random noises and advertisements in the background...Any help would be most appreciated.

Thank you, but I tried that, and it didn't work. Since it's a school computer, restarting it resets all of the settings back to default, so I can't try anything involving that.

What is the make and model of your computer?

First, run the Playing audio troubleshoot - open Start > Settings > Update & security > Troubleshoot
Scroll down, select Playing audio
Click Run the troubleshooter

When complete, restart your computer then check if audio is working again.

Press Windows key + X
Click Device Manager
Expand Sound, video and game controllers

Right click your audio adapter
Click Properties
Click the Driver tab

Is there an option rollback?
If so, click it.

Also, check to make sure the audio driver is fully updated. This is often the problem when you upgrade to a new version of Windows 10. Sometimes reinstalling the latest available driver from the manufacturers website helps.

Open Start, type: change sound card
Select the Playback
Right click your headset
Click Set as Default Device if it isn't already

Select your speakers
Click Properties
Click the Levels tab
Use the slider to adjust level

Open control panel -> hardware and sound -> devices and printers -> properties on my BT speaker -> hardware tab -> audio/video remote control HID properties -> general tab: "change settings" -> Power management tab: un-check the box that says "allow the computer to switch off this device to save power"

1. Play a youtube video with the soundcard speaker jack unplugged and let it play through the laptop's inbuilt speakers.
2. While it is playing, plug in the audio jack and see if it starts playing.
Best,
Andre
