Hello,

Welcome to Microsoft Community Forums.

1.       Have you made any changes to the system?

2.       What is the version of Internet Explorer on your system currently?

3.       Are you able to install other updates successfully?

To check the version of Internet Explorer on your PC, refer to the link below:

Which version of Internet Explorer am I using?

I would suggest you to try the following methods and check:

Method 1

Try to troubleshoot the issue with Windows Updates.

Windows Update troubleshooter
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Windows-Update-troubleshooter

Method 2

Follow the steps given in the support article:

Troubleshooting a failed installation of Internet Explorer 11.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2872074/en-US

Important Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Method 3

You can also try to manually install Internet Explorer 11 in clean boot state.

Follow the link below to perform clean boot:

“How to perform a clean boot in Windows”

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Note: Please go through the section: ‘How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting’ of the Kb article to boot the computer in normal startup after fixing the issue.

For downloading Internet Explorer 11:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/internet-explorer/ie-11-worldwide-languages

Hope this helps. Please reply back with the results to let us help you further.

Thank you.

In answering your questions above.

1. I downloaded, installed and ran program called CCleaner, also upgraded Adobe (as recommended), and upgraded JAVA (as recommended)

2. Internet Explorer 11, Version 11.0.9600.16428CO, Update Version RTM (KB2841134)

3. The latest updates were not installed.

Please answer each of the following [admittedly tedious] diagnostic questions in a correspondingly-numbered list in your very next reply, preferably without quoting my post:

1a. When (approx. date) did you purchase the computer?

1b. Did Win7 64-bit come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it, did you do a clean install of Win7, or did you upgrade the computer to Win7?

1c. Is it the same computer as in one or both of these previous threads of yours?

2. What is the full name of your installed anti-virus application or security suite and when (approx. date) does your current subscription expire? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) are installed? What third-party firewall (if any)?

3. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer since you bought it?

4. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [pick one] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)

5. Is KB2893294, KB2892074, KB2893984 and/or KB2887069 listed in Installed Updates (not Update History)? [1]

6. Is KB2898785 listed as a failed update in Update History (this time)?

7a. When (exact date) was Windows Internet Explorer 11 originally installed according to Installed Updates?

7b. Was IE11 originally offered & installed via Windows Update or did you install it manually?

8. Were you running IE8, IE9 or IE10 before you upgraded to IE11?

9. Is Firefox, Chrome or any other alternate browser installed?

10. Is Adobe Flash Player v11.9.900.170 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY! => http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

11. Do you have backups of ALL the changes CCleaner's Registry Cleaner component and any other "registry cleaners" have EVER made to the computer? [2]

[1] Start | Control Panel | Programs and Features | View installed updates (in left-hand menu)

[2] Injudicious use of registry cleaners may be playing a role here. TIP: If you ever again think your Registry needs to be cleaned, repaired, boosted, tuned-up, cured, tweaked, fixed, maximized, "swept" or optimised (it doesn't), read http://chris.pirillo.com/are-registry-cleaners-safe-to-use/ and/or http://www.edbott.com/weblog/2005/04/why-i-dont-use-registry-cleaners/ then draw your own conclusions.  Related => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2563254

Welcome back!

1. Did you (a) uninstall the preinstalled Norton free-trialware AND THEN (b) run the Norton Removal Tool & reboot (c) AND THEN do a clean install of Norton 360 v20.x last year?

  • Fact: Norton (and McAfee) applications are notorious for not uninstalling (or upgrading) cleanly. The "leftovers" may your troublemaker here.

2. Is KB2913602 listed in Installed Updates now?

3. Is Adobe Flash Player v12.0.0.38 (or higher) installed now? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY! => http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

4. Are you still getting "Windows is not Genuine" prompts?

NOTES:

  • Your computer's missing a critical security update for IE11.

  • Do not delete those two (2) REG file backups!

Roll up your sleeves & cross your fingers...

[You will want to print these instructions for offline reference. You must complete all of the steps in one (1) uninterrupted session - allow a minimum of two hours. If a Step says to reboot, reboot!]

1. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar).

2. Download/run the Norton Remove & Reinstall tool (NRnR.exe) per the instructions on this page: https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v60392881_EndUserProfile_en_us

NOTE: Do NOT enable or install any Norton Add-ons or toolbars (e.g., Norton Anti-Phishing) just yet.

3. Manually and repeatedly run (Norton) LiveUpdate until you get a "no more updates" or similar prompt.

4. Download/run the appropriate scripts from the following Trusted Source (my colleague IE MVP Kai Schätzl): http://iefaq.info/index.php?action=artikel&cat=42&id=133&artlang=en

Note => The scripts are good for IE9, IE10 & IE11, too!

Tip: The file named ie8-rereg.all.zip contains both of the scripts below (plus a third one you will NOT use).

5a. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar) then double-click on the file named ie8-rereg.32on64.cmd to run the script.

5b. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar) then double-click on the file named ie8-rereg.64on64.cmd to run that script then reboot.

6. Re-assert Internet Explorer as the default Browser in the CUSTOM (<=important!) section of Set Program Access and Computer Defaults. [1]

7a. Right-click on the following link and SAVE the download to your desktop: http://www.slipstick.com/doit/chromehtml.reg [2]

7b. Double-click on the file you saved in #11a above & accept the prompt to MERGE the data with the Registry.

8. Reset Internet Explorer per the instructions on this page =>http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

Note=> For optimal results, check the Delete personal settings option.

9a. Open Internet Explorer (only!) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946414 [ignore the title & Symptoms].

9b. Ignoring any "Not recommended" or similar warnings, run Fix It 50202 in DEFAULT and then AGGRESSIVE modes. [3]

10. Reboot one last time then run a manual check for updates & see if all missing security-related updates (e.g., KB2898785) will successfully install now. Follow all prompts.

      • HOW TO run a manual check for updates
         http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/How-can-I-tell-if-my-computer-is-up-to-date

11. Upgrade to Flash Player v12.0.0.44 (or higher) by opening Internet Explorer ONLY to this page? => http://www.adobe.com/go/getflash

  • BEWARE any pre-checked options to "drive-by" install unwanted, third-party software (e.g., Google Toolbar; McAfee Security Scan)!

12. Reply to this post with a status report.

Good luck!

Dear PA Bear,  Well, I rolled up my sleeves and crossed everything I could.

It took me nearly four hours to complete your instructions, as I was being very careful to understand and perform the tasks you offered.

I completed all the instructions, up to number 10 on the list.   I followed all the instructions and prompts for running for updates.   When I ran the manual check for updates,  I received a prompt to update for new security updates,  I selected install updates.  Unfortunately, the install failed.   Again Code948.

The one error I may have made, was on your instructions to "open Internet Explorer "only".   When I went to Internet Explorer to open,  it defaulted to My Yahoo page,  so I used that page to open any links.  Now when I select Internet Explorer to open,  it defaults to some ridiculous page called www.portaldosites.com

I have attached two pictures that will show you details on the error message for the updates, and a list of installed updates.

Thank You so very much for your time and help.  Forgive my lack of intelligence and understanding of what is probably no problem for the majority.

Sincerely, Neal
