If you're like almost every home computer user these days and use a router as part of your connection to the Internet, you have two IP addresses -- an "external" IP address that faces the Internet and an "internal" IP address that all other devices on your home network sees.

To find your external IP address, go to a web site such as https://whatismyipaddress.com/

To find your internal IP address, click Start, type Command Prompt in the Search box, and press Enter.

In the black Command Prompt, type the following line and press Enter:

     ipconfig

Close the Command Prompt when done.  The "IPv4 Address" is your internal IP address.

How about explaining what it is that you are trying to do.  That is, why are you interested in knowing your IP address?

In general, the IP address assigned to your Ethernet connection will be different than the IP address assigned to your wi-fi connection, especially if you are connected over both at the same time as shown in the figure in my earlier post.

For most people, either the "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection" or the "Wireless adapter Wireless Network Connection" will show an IP address and the other device will show "media disconnected."

I have Android tv boxes that I watch TV on for 3 of our 4 tvs. We use the Wi-Fi for one and when using our cell phones. We just put the 3 tvs on the Ethernet cables and can not get them to connect. I was asked by the Android box set up what my IP address was and thought maybe I put in the wrong address. Everything worked with Wi-Fi. Didn't think it would be so complicated :-(

Good thing you clarified.

You shouldn't need to enter an IP address at all.  The specific screens will be different for different makes and models of Android TV boxes, but they should all be pretty similar to this:  https://www.gostreamer.com/blog/configure-network-settings-wifiethernet-on-mx2-android-box/

It will be a bit more difficult because the TV screen is not your computer, but can you take a photo of the screen where you're asked to enter an IP address and include it in your reply?

  • Transfer the photo from your phone or camera to your computer (make a not ofe where on the computer you save it).
  • Click the "Insert Image" button in the toolbar of the Reply window.
  • Browse to the image file you saved, select it, and click "Open"
  • Click the "Upload" button

What is the make and model of your Android TV box?

What did you connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to?  You should have connected it to your router.

Please look for the label on the back or bottom of whatever you connected to the other end of the Ethernet cable and let me know its make and model of that device.

I am sorry but at this time I do not have anything to take a picture with. My husbands phone has a camera but he is at work. I can tell you where I went to see it.

My android tv box is a MeCool M8S pro W. On the main screen I went to the Setting, then the Network section, at the bottom of the screen I clicked IP settings, here it listed DHCP and STATIC. In the static section it asked for the IP address. The DHCP section said it was connected.

My router is from Charter Cable, it is a Netgear "My Charter WiFi-7-2G., R6300 Smart WiFi, Model number R6300v2. Our internet speed is 100 megabites . When we do a speed test it is always over 60 in every room.

We plugged the Ethernet lines to the back of the router (it had 3 open slots, one for each new line) and then plugged them into each individual android box used at each tv.

Hopes this helps and I really appreciate you taking the time with me!

You should have left it at "DHCP" -- that allows your router to assign an IP address automatically to the Android TV box.

Do you have a specific reason for wanting to set a static IP address?  If you do, I can help you with that, but let's leave that for later.

I can't find a User Manual for a Mecool M8S Pro online so I can't see exactly what you're looking at, but if the "DHCP section said it was connected" why do you think it was not connected?  When it was still set at "DHCP" did it show an IP address?

Do you have a computer that connects to your Netgear router?  If you do, you can check in the router's configuration utility to see if the M8S box is or is not actually connected when you leave its network setting at "DHCP."

Assuming that you do have a computer that connects through the Netgear router to the Internet (it doesn't matter whether the computer connects using WiFi or Ethernet), here's how you would check.  This also assumes that no one changed the router's login credentials from their defaults.

First set up the Android TV box to connect using Ethernet and DHCP, so that it says "connected."

On your computer:

  1. Do an "ipconfig" command as shown in my first reply above and look at the IP address for the "Default Gateway."  In the screenshot in my reply, the Default Gateway is 192.168.1.1
  2. Open a web browser and enter the Default Gateway's IP address
  3. At the login screen, the Netgear defaults are admin for the User Name and password for the password, both in lower case.  If this doesn't work, Charter may have set its own credentials.  Look at the label on the bottom of the router for a username and password under "Router Login."  If that doesn't work either, we will stop here (you could reset the router, but you almost certainly don't want to do that at this point).
  4. Assuming that you were able to log into the router, you should be on the "BASIC" screen.  Click the "Attached Devices" button:

  5. You should see something like this:

  6. Is your MeCool box listed there?  If not, if there is anything listed under "Wired Devices," please provide the data in the MAC Address box for each listed device.
