When a picture is deleted (jpeg, jpg, psd, rif) the thumbnail still remains in pictures folder until the folder is refreshed

Windows 7 delete picture and thumbnail still remains in folder until refresh.

Recently upgraded from Vista Home 64 to Windows 7 Professional 64.
Every time I delete a picture (jpeg, jpg, psd, rif) the thumbnail still remains in my pictures folder until I refresh.  This only seems to happen when I am in thumbnail, tiles or content view in my pictures.  If I am details or list view, the picture goes away like it's supposed to.  My music, videos do not seem to have this problem even in thumbnail view.

Is anyone else having this problem?
Am I missing some system file, should I be worried?

Thank you so much in advance for any input.

Hi SaM4842,

From your post I understand that on deleting a particular picture from ‘My Pictures’ folder, the picture does not get deleted until you refresh the folder, is that correct?

I tried to reproduce the scenario here on a Windows 7 machine. With thumbnail view in My Pictures folder, on deleting a picture, it automatically got deleted (to Recycle Bin) without needing a ‘refresh’. I wasn’t able to reproduce the issue.

I’d suggest you to boot into safe mode and try repeating the same and check if the issue repeats or not.
Safe mode starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and services. Safe mode is a troubleshooting option for Windows that starts your computer in a limited state. Only the basic files and drivers necessary to run Windows are started. The words Safe Mode appear in the corners of your monitor to identify which Windows mode you're using.

Follow the below steps to boot into safe mode with networking:

1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
2. Select Safe Mode option when the Advanced startuo Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.

Refer the link below for more details:

Advanced startup options (including safe mode)
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode

Let us know if the issue recurs in safe mode or not. We shall proceed with the troubleshooting accordingly.

Hello Gokul,

Thank you for the reply.
I have tried in safe mode and it still seems to leave the thumbnail in the folder until I refresh.
To me, so far it is a minor annoyance, but do you think it can be some kind of major issue?
Could I have done something wrong when I upgraded to 7 (I had to do a clean install).

Thank you again.

Hi SaM4842,

I’d suggest you to do a System File Checker (SFC) scan on your computer. SFC tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the system files by using the correct versions.

To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
2. Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue

3. At the command prompt, the following line, and then press ENTER:

   sfc /scannow

Check the below link for details:

How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

Hope this helps!

Hello Gokul,

I tried the scan and it tells me "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."....

Do you have any other suggestions?  Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thank you again.

I have the same problem with documents in my Documents Library.  Whenever I delete a file from the Documents Library it gets sent to the recycling bin just fine, but I have to refresh the view to make it appear that way.  I just installed Win 7 Ultimate yesterday so I can't imagine the filesystem or anything like that is responsible.

I have same problem.

Windows Explorer still shows deleted file(-s) in the folder until refresh (F5) is hit.

The problem is intermittent and persists for a while when happens.

Might have something to do with resume from the sleep mode.

Closing and reopening Windows Explorer does not help, however closing some of other open applications (Outlook, WMP, ...) seems to help.

Afterwards the auto-refresh of Windows Exploerer view works again, even after re-openning all the closed applications... until it happens again next time on resume from sleep (?).

This problem occurs when you delete thumbnailed files from a folder contained in a "library". If you have "show all folders" checked off in the "folder options" dialog you can get to the actual folder where deletes take place immediately.

1) You are probably right that this affects only folders contained in "Libraries" like "Documents", "Videos", "Pictures".

I have not seen this problem with other folders so far.

But unchecking the "Show All Folders" option did not help.

Deleting or moving files is not reflected immediately, a refresh is still required.

2) It does not depend on the View (whether the files are thumbnailed or not) as it happens with both "Details" and "Icon" views.

I want to vote that this is lousy, too.  It happens in LIBRARIES but not folders.  If I could redirect the MUSIC listing on my start menu to go to the FOLDER instead of the library, I wouldn't care.  But it goes to the library, where I have to hit refresh every time I delete a file in order to see changes.

I found that reinstalling works great! Although that is not the answer anybody wants. Comon Microsoft! There's got to be an answer!
