Who/what is Realtek? I know it is a hardware company  but how come it appears able to install  itself on my PC?

RealTek is a company that has a lot of bits and pieces of hardware built into many of today's consumer pc's and laptops.  Everything from Audio, Bluetooth, PCIe controllers etc.  You must have some of that hardware on your pc and it's simply updating itself because there are updates available for it.  By default Windows will download the latest drivers, firmware and software for 3rd party products, and that is why it is most likely auto updating as it were.
