What is CompPkgSrv?

I noticed "CompPkgSrv"  in the task manger with the description "Component Package Support Server" and this is the first Time I've ever seen it. I've searched for it online but haven't been able to find anything about it. What is this?

Hi James,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

What is the version of Windows installed on the computer?

The service might be present because of any particular application/program installed on the computer which requires server components.

You can try to close all the applications relating the same and check if the service name appears on the task manager.

In case of any threats like malware/virus, I would request you to run the Microsoft Safety Scanner.

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

The Microsoft Safety Scanner is not a replacement for using an antivirus software program that provides ongoing protection.

Safety Scanner only scans when manually triggered and is available for use 10 days after being downloaded. We recommend that you always download the latest version of this tool before each scan.

Please get back to us with the required details to help you further.

I have version 1809  OS build 17763.55. I've scanned with both Mcafee and windows and they have found nothing. CompPkgSrv doesn't appear in the task manger on start up, I'm not running anything to do with servers and I've only seen it after the 1809 update.

Hi James,

Thank you for replying.

Try the following steps:

  1. Type ‘services’ on the Windows search bar and press enter key.
  2. On the services window, search for the service name.
  3. After selecting the service name, you will find the description column next to it.

This will help you know about the service’s use/work on the computer.

Hope it helps.

Hi,

I have same issue here, namely comppkgsrv process starting after a while. Can't find definitive information what it does. Also Windows 10 is updated to 1809 on my computer.

It's not a service but only a process, so can't find any information on Services list.

Cheers,

Sebastian
