What is causing "unknown usb device descriptor request failed" ?

I've been having this issue for weeks now.
I have a Logitech mouse on an Asus x571GT laptop, and one day the Bluetooth connection to my mouse suddenly disappeared.
I checked and the Bluetooth on my laptop disappeared. I checked DEVICE MANAGER and the Bluetooth was gone (unless I selected to show hidden devices) but under the Universal Serial Bus, one of the drivers is called "unknown usb device descriptor request failed" appeared.

If my Bluetooth is working, that error isn't there. The second my Bluetooth disappears, "unknown usb device descriptor request failed" appears under Universal Serial Buses dropdown menu.

I've searched online and...

1) My Windows 10 is up to date
2) My drivers are up to date

3) I've uninstalled "unknown usb device descriptor request failed" and restarted the computer. Sometimes the Bluetooth returns and everything is fine for a couple of minutes/hours/days before it suddenly disappears again, and "unknown usb device descriptor request failed" driver reappears

4) I've disabled Fast boot up in the Power settings

5) I've selected DISABLE under Turn off USB Power Saving.

6) I've uninstalled all the USB drivers and Bluetooth and restarted the computer. Sometimes it works....

Everything I've tried, is only a temporary fix, and not a permanent one.
Has anyone else come across this problem and actually has a solution that works that doesn't involve a factory reset?

Hello, I’m Virginia, a fellow user like yourself.
Sorry to hear you’re experiencing problems. May I ask which Windows 10/11 build are you running - 21H2 or 22H2?

Please retry these in order.
If your Bluetooth is disabled then do the following to enable it.
Uninstall the device from device manager and restart Bluetooth service.
Start > services.msc
Right-click "Bluetooth Support Service."
Choose Automatic.
Go to device manager and right-click on your computer name and click "Scan for hardware changes"
Install the Bluetooth device drivers from the manufacturer's website, if any.

If the device isn’t showing under device manager or under show hidden devices then shutdown the pc, unplug the power cable & then reconnect, then go to device manager & see if there’s any unknown devices showing, if so uninstall this & then scan for hardware changes & hopefully Bluetooth will reappear.

Do any other Bluetooth devices connect?
Does the Logitech mouse have its own USB dongle? Mine does. If so have you tried using this to connect the mouse?

It may be the Bluetooth module is failing.

I hope this helps.
Virginia - Time Lady.

Hello Virginia!

Sorry for the delay in writing back. Busy with work.

To answer your questions: I'm running Windows 10, 22H2. OS Build: 19045.3086

So what I ended up doing a few days ago was uninstalling the Logitech mouse and reinstalling it but with the USB dongle instead of the Bluetooth. So far, it was working.

However, I did notice when I opened up Device Manager, the Bluetooth was missing, and the "unknown usb device descriptor request failed" was present under USB dropdown menu.

I also did notice that in the past 2 days, that my computer has been freezing and crashing a lot. If I'm playing a video via YouTube or Zoom, or even a Screensaver, my computer will lock up for a couple of seconds before releasing. Sometimes it locks up and crashes and I have to force it to shut down by holding down the power button.

This morning I booted it up, went to brush my teeth and came back to find the computer had crashed/froze while the screensaver was on.
I rebooted it and the Bluetooth is back....for now.

As for your suggestions.
The Bluetooth was already set to Automatic.

I've done the 'uninstall unknown usb device descriptor request failed' and restarted the computer and/or 'scan for system changes' and sometimes the Bluetooth reappears (and will eventually disappear) and sometimes the 'unknown usb device descriptor request failed' will be there.

Just tried your solution.
I'll give it a couple of hours to see if it works or not, since my Bluetooth tends to randomly disappear when the "unknown usb device descriptor request failed" appears, and that sometimes causes my computer to crash.

Keep you posted...

But after restart, I opened Device Manager and the Bluetooth was there with a warning/hazard icon on it. I ran the troubleshooter for the Bluetooth and it restarted the Bluetooth, and so far working fine...

Hello Andrew.
Just to be sure I would run a malware scan.
Try running these programs:
MBAM free: https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/ ensure scan for rootkits is enabled.
Eset online scanner: http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/
Adwcleaner: https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner/
Also check the router to see if there are any unknown connections:

If these find one or more infections but do not fully remove them it will be wise to register with a malware removal site to receive dedicated malware removal instructions, an expert will remain with you throughout the process until confirmation that your PC is 100% clean.

I've suspected something like that and ran my Bitdefender, full scan twice before and nothing came up.
Maybe I'll run a malwarebytes scan...

Hopefully malware won’t be the cause. I would certainly run those scans just to be on the safe side. Remember to select scan for root kits.

Some further things to check. I apologise if you’ve already tried them:

Ran the scans and nothing bad except it found "pup.optional.astromenda" found in Google chrome that it can't seem to remove.

So far so good!
Your solution seems to be working!

Question. Is it possible that by following the video, that would lead to the computer experiencing a "Stop code UNEXPECTED kernel MODE" What failed: "wpprecorder.sys" and leading to a Blue Screen & crashing?
It happened twice today.
