what is a "desktop.ini" file and why is it part of every folder on my network hard drive?

I have window vista (64 bit).  I have a WD hard drive connected to a linksys E4200 wireless router. I created a music folder on the network hard drive and whenever I transfer or rip music files to that drive, this "desktop.ini" also appear as part of every folder.  Is it OK to remove this file?
Answer
Answer

Desktop.ini is a hidden file Windows operating systems use to store folder settings. For example, you've created a music library so desktop.ini will contain settings to tell the UI to display files within the folder differently to a normal folder; it will also contain settings for customised icons and names.

You can delete the file if you like; the only negative consequence will be the loss of these settings/customisation.
