What are the limits for the number of folders in a file path for Windows?

I have run into file name length errors while trying to copy files from a hard drive to a portable drive using different versions of Windows.  The file and folder names are within the Windows parameters, but the files are buried in numerous folders (10 or more). Is there a limit as to how many folders you can put a file path and still be able to copy the file and folder path?

No limit to folders - it's the number of CHARACTERS in the path. Currently limited to 256 I think...
