Q: VSS Event ids 8193 & 22 - VSS not registered This thread is locked from future replies

original title:

Whenever my backup software runs (Acronis) I get event errors 8193 (Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance.  hr = 0x80040154, Class not registered
Operation:    Instantiating VSS server ) &

22 (Volume Shadow Copy Service error: A critical component required by the Volume Shadow Copy service is not registered. This might happened if an error occurred during Windows setup or during installation of a Shadow Copy provider. The error returned from CoCreateInstance on class with CLSID {e579ab5f-1cc4-44b4-bed9-de0991ff0623} and Name IVssCoordinatorEx2 is [0x80040154, Class not registered].

Operation:    Instantiating VSS server).

Anyone know a resolution for this?

All of the postings on MS point to Server 2003 or Vista.  I have tried re-registering DLL's listed in those posts but I receive errors on several of them.

Maybe someone will notice something missing, I don't know what they are supposed to look like anyway.

Help is appreciated.

Hi JanBat,

• Which is the operating system on your computer?

• Since when are you facing this issue?

• Does this happen only when you backup on Acronis or on windows backup also?

• Did you make any recent changes to the computer prior to this issue?

I would first suggest you to check if the Volume Shadow Copy service is running.

Step 1: Check the status of Volume Shadow Copy service

a.  Click on Start, type Services in Start Search. When the Services page is open, check for Volume Shadow Copy service.

b.  Right click on Volume Shadow Copy service (VSS) and Check if it is started.

c.  If it is stopped select Start or Restart.

Step 2: You may also try to temporarily disable the third party Security Software and firewalls and check if you can try backup.

Note: Enable the security software back after resolving the issue.

You may refer the following link to Disable Antivirus Program:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Disable-antivirus-software

If this happens only with Acronis, then check if the below mentioned link helps to fix the issue:

http://kb.acronis.com/content/7568

Note: Using Third Party Software, including hardware drivers can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Third Party Software can be solved. Using Third Party Software is at your own risk.

Hope this information is helpful.
