vista sp2 install error

I have been trying to use the stand alone sp2 update for windows vista but it has not worked.   I get the same error every time  "E_UNEXPECTED(0x8000ffff)"   I currently have sp1 installed and have done the things listed on the troubleshooting page like the system update readiness tool and closing other programs.   I get pretty far into the process.   Any ideas

On a Windows Vista-based computer, when you download updates using Windows Update or Microsoft Update, you may receive error code 0x80000FFF. You may also encounter this error when you launch Windows Update from the Control Panel.

This problem may occur if any of the following values exist in the Windows registry:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS\PendingXmlIdentifier
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS\NextQueueEntryIndex
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS\AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving

Hi faffle,

Did you use the suggestions in the article Dave D suggested?  You can also try using the installer cleanup tool.  Here's a link with information and a download link for the tool.
