Vista not loading desktop

My computer starts to login screen.  When I log in I get a black screen with mouse pointer.  Ctrl-alt-del brings up menu and I have tried restarting in safe mode which will load desktop.  I've tried running system restore in safe mode but the program states that I haven't created a restore point.  I don't have Vista installation disk because Windows was preloaded on my system.

I have the exact same problem and have no idea how to get it back to normal! The only thing I can see is a flashing white cursor and a black screen. :S

Hello brian039 & jo_star,

Thank you for using Microsoft Windows Vista Forums.

Sorry you are having this problem!  How long have you been experiencing this issue?  Have you made any changes to your operating system prior to having this issue?  Any new Windows Updates or new software/hardware installed?

Since you can log into Safe Mode, once you are there perform the steps below.  If no errors occur with SFC please reboot and test again.  Please let us know status.  Thanks!

Running the System File Checker

1.     Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator.

2.     Click Continue or supply Administrator credentials if prompted.

3.     In the Command Prompt window type the following, and press Enter:

sfc /scannow

4.     You should see the following on-screen messages:

Beginning the system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.

Verification % complete.

5.     Once the scan has completed you will receive an onscreen message resembling one of the following:

…found no integrity violations

found corruption but repaired it

found corruption that it could not repair

6.     Please reply with the completion message that you received.

THe scan completed and I got the message "found no integrity violations".  What should I do now since the desktop still does not load?  When the desktop should appear after the Vista welcome screen, I get a black screen with a white mouse pointer.  THe pointer moves and ctl-alt-del works so I can log off, restart, shutdown, etc. using task manager.  I have also tried system restore in safe mode but it doesn't fix my problem.

I had a similar problem and ran this scan and came up with

Windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix them. Details are included in the CBS.log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

And i got this error on start up

Could not load or run C:\Users\KiheiK~1\AppData\Local\Temp\dwm.exe specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry.

Hi there,

I'm also having the same issue, but I can access the Task Manager and it shows "Personalized Settings" is not responding.

I restarted and boot with safe mode with networking and I can't restore (there is no restore point) and I run sfc /scannow (as  administrator) shows "No violations".

What should I do to get back my desktop in normal boot? Please help me.
