User name change windows 10

Hello. I hope there is a brainbox out there to give me some solid help.

I have changed laptops from a Dell using windows 10 to an Asus using windows 10. I am the only user (administrator). I copied files I wanted on the old laptop across to the new laptop. However the user name on the old laptop is Graham and the username I was given on the new laptop is waveb. The problem now is that my website building program cannot link up to sub-files and folders that it used to because it is showing xxx > Users > waveb and NOT xxx > users > Graham. Please tell me how I can change back to Graham without losing all my settings and preferences etc. and without solving this problem and causing a bunch more.

The username I was given on the new laptop is waveb.

-> I would have created a new account straight away rather than using an account name selected by someone else.

The problem now is that my website building program cannot link up to sub-files and folders.

-> You could create a symbolic link to keep this program happy. Here is how you do it:

  1. Create a desktop shortcut for cmd.exe.
  2. Right-click this shortcut, then left-click "Run as administrator".
  3. Accept the challenge. You will get a black frame.
  4. Type these commands EXACTLY and press Enter after each:
    mklink  /d  "c:\Users\Graham"  "C:\Users\waveb"
    exit
Whenever your program looks at Graham it will be automatically redirected to waveb.

The proper thing might be to make another new separate   user\Graham account.

Then you have some copying and settings to do again, but maybe your program will exist in both accounts.

Settings / Accounts / Family & other users

Hi Shaedow

My name is Andre Da Costa; an Independent Consultant, Windows Insider MVP and Windows & Devices for IT MVP. I'm here to help you with your problem.

There are two ways to change your user account name in Windows 10.

See this article for comprehensive steps if you want to change things like the user folder name too:

https://www.groovypost.com/howto/change-account...

If you just want to rename the account follow these steps:

If you are using a Microsoft Account, go to:

https://account.microsoft.com/profile/

Click name.

Thanks Frederik for the quick response. I have decided not to mess with any DOS commands with a brand new and expensive machine. Looks like I will just have to live with the changes and direct my application program to the newly referred to folders directly. Its a pain in the butt but once its done its done. I got to change my user name but it has no effect on the USERS folder name.

Hi Mike. Thanks for the advice. I spent ages trimming duplicated stuff from my 6 year old Dell before backing the final result up and them moving select files from backup to the new machine. I have an SSD on this one an wouldn't sleep well if I went to bed knowing I have two different profiles taking up space on the new machine which I wanted to be lean and mean. As I said to Frederik, I will do another workaround pointing the program to the new folder locations.

Hi Andre. Thanks for the support. I think what I said to Frederik and Mike about sums it up. I had best try the simplest approach before I twist my new machine into knots and then want to toss it.

fwiw

Control / System / Advanced System Settings ... you can remove an unused user profile & delete the username folder if it doesnt automatically disappear.
