USB drivers missing with every reboot

Every time I boot my computer (off, or restart) I need to go to device manager and Update Driver Software, Browse My Computer, Let me Choose..., to be able to use my USB ports and my Bluetooth. This is extremely annoying because most of times I use my laptop as desktop so I use Bluetooth mouse and keyboard and every boot I need to open the laptop, reinstall drivers, and then I can use it. All drivers are up to date, motherboard, BIOS, etc. Happened before when I had Win8 too.

How can I fix this problem? is there any? Is a good machine for what I need, I wouldn't want to go to the -buy new computer- fix.

Hi Ganser,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community. I regret the inconvenience caused to you. Let me help you.

Method 1: As a work around, I suggest you to download and install the latest Bluetooth and chipset drivers from your computer manufacturer website and check if it resolves the issue.

Method 2: You can try to disable power management of the USB hub.

  • Click Start, type “device manager” (without quotes) in the Start Search box, and then click Device Manager in the Programs list.

  • In the Device Manager Dialog box, expand Universal Serial Bus (USB) controllers, right-click USB device, and then click Properties.

  • In the Properties dialog box, click the Power Management tab. Clear the check box “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”. Check to see if it helps.

Check if it resolves the issue.

Please keep us posted on the issue. We will be happy to assist you accordingly.

I find no Power Management tab on the Universal Serial Bus Controller properties. It has only General, Driver, and Details. No driver is found on a web search for a driver. I have a custom-built machine, so have no idea where to go for drivers.

Any chance this could be a mother board issue? I have an ASUS motherboard, but their support is ... less than stellar. Their best advice is to "Ask Microsoft."

Drivers are also missing for Ethernet Controller, SM Bus Controller, and Unknown device.

Hi,

As an initial troubleshooting step, I suggest you to run a full scan of your computer using Microsoft Security Scanner and check if it helps.

http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

If the issue still persists, I suggest you to download the latest drivers for chipset and motherboard from the manufacturer’s website and check if the issue persists. If there is no updated drivers available on the computer manufacturer’s website, then download the latest drivers and try installing it in Windows 8 compatibility mode. Compatibility mode runs the program using settings from a previous version of Windows.

https://www.asus.com/us/support

Follow these steps to install the drivers in compatibility mode and check if that helps.

a. Download the driver from the manufacturer’s website.

b. Right-click on the driver setup file and click on ‘properties’.

c. Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select Windows 8 operating system from the drop down menu and proceed with the installation. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.

BIOS Disclaimer:

Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

PROBLEM SOLVED!

I finally solved this by going into Control Panel > Power Options to create a custom power plan. Under the Advanced Settings options, I disabled the USB selective suspend setting. I have not had a device outage in several days now where I was having them almost every time I left my computer for over ten minutes.
