You fail to say what Mail Client you are using, or what the exact error msg is?

Do we assume that you have a McAfee sub?

Im sorry, as you can tell my knowledge in this area is limited. it is a microsoft email running through outlook. I have a subscription to McAfee yes, but it was happening before i got the subscription.

the error message is virus scan failed - and then it wont download the document to my laptop.

it happens when i try to save a file from email and when i try to download documents from any browser. Apologies for not providing all the info you need and your patience with helping me on this issue.

I recommend that you check all your antivirus programs if possible, since a system may have several antivirus installed. It may be necessary to disable McAfee and Windows Defender for a moment to verify that you can successfully complete the process by opening the Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and looking for processes related to any antivirus.
They usually appear in the system tray (next to the clock) to see if there is a hidden antivirus icon. And if possible, look for the "Programs and Features" section to uninstall any antivirus you don't need.

Also, check your browser settings. Look for options related to download security and temporarily disable them. Also, some extensions can interfere with downloads. Disable extensions related to security or antivirus.

If this problem occured prior to any McAfee sub, then uninstall McAfee via win add/remove (you can allways re-install later.

Then if you are accessing mail via web browser and dont have an MS Office suite, open the Win Mail app and add your mail account to test there. (Simply enter "Mail" in the win search box)

Hi Ivan

I have seen in task manager that my system has

Windows security

windows defender

Mcafee

how do I turn them off?

I'm not sure how a browser setting would effect me saving a file direct from my email to my laptop? and if it is in fact related - how do i turn off what i need to in both both of my browsers as it happens in both Edge and Google.

You might need to explain this to me like I'm 5 years old. I'm sorry about this!

Did you add your mail account to the Win Mail app?

Since you are now getting 'independant advisers' replies I will no longer respond or follow this tread as it will only lead to confusion

It is a pleasure for me to be able to help and guide you through the process.
The important thing is to do it in an orderly manner and the first one to be deactivated will be McAfee.

Steps to deactivate McAfee: they may vary slightly depending on the version of McAfee you have installed, but in general you will follow these steps:

- Open the McAfee interface: Look for the McAfee icon in the system tray or start menu and click on it.
- Access the settings: Look for an option like "Settings", "Options" or a gear.
- Look for the deactivation option: Depending on your version of McAfee, this option may be in different places. Look for something like "Disable protection", "Pause protection" or "Disable real-time scanning".
- Follow the instructions: McAfee will ask you to confirm your decision and may give you the option to disable protection for a certain period of time or indefinitely.

By performing this process, Windows Defender will position itself as the main antivirus and to deactivate Windows Defender you can do it in the following ways:

1: through Windows Settings
- Open Settings: Search for "Settings" in the start menu and open it.
- Go to Update and Security: Click on this option.
- Select Windows Security: Enter this section.
- Search for Virus and Threat Protection: Click on this option.
- Manage settings: Click on this button.
- Disable Real-Time Protection: Slide the switch to the "Off" position.
2: Using the Group Policy Editor (Gpedit.msc)
• This method is only available in some editions of Windows.
1. Open the Group Policy Editor: Search for "gpedit.msc" in the start menu and run it.
2. Navigate to: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Defender Antivirus.
3. Find the "Antivirus and threat protection settings" setting and disable it.
Now I recommend removing any extensions installed on your browsers as these can cause download or browsing errors, so to remove Chrome extensions you can do this:
- Open Chrome and go to extensions:
o Click on the three vertical dots in the top right corner.
o Select "More tools" and then "Extensions".
- Manage extensions:
o Here you can see all your extensions in more detail.
o Temporarily disable: If you just want to stop using an extension for a while, you can disable it by sliding the switch to the left.
o Permanently remove: To remove an extension, find the one you want to remove and click the "Remove" button that appears below it.
- Confirm: Just like in the quick method, you will be asked to confirm the removal.
Additionally, you can remove hidden extensions (on Windows):
Find the extensions folder: It is usually located at:
o C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions
and delete the contents.

Now the steps to remove Edge extensions are also:
1. From Edge settings:
- Open Microsoft Edge and click on the three vertical dots in the top right corner.
- Select "Extensions".
- A list of all installed extensions will be displayed.
- Next to each extension, you will find a switch to activate or deactivate it. If you want to remove it completely, click on the three vertical dots to the right of the extension and select "Remove".
2. From the address bar:
- Type in the address bar: edge://extensions/
- The extensions page will open directly.
- Follow the same steps as in the previous method to deactivate or remove extensions.
