Hello, my name is Anderson Souza, I am an Independent Advisor and I hope I can help you with your problem today.

You may encounter a situation while updating Windows 10 to version 1607 that the update process appears to become stuck on a specific percentage (EX:65% or 99 or 100%) when attempting to upgrade your system from Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 or update between versions of Windows 10.

The upgrade process usually takes 90 minutes or less to complete, but there is a very small subset of systems, usually older or slower ones, where the upgrade process can take longer than typically expected.

This situation is not related to a specific upgrade tool and has been shown to happen with Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant, Media Creation Tool, USB media, and ISO media.

In these cases, even if the progress percentage appears stuck, the upgrade is still running. An error message should be displayed in case of actual failure.

Cancelling and trying alternate methods is unlikely to improve the experience and will result in the loss any upgrade progress you have already made.

Dell's support website, for example, recommends waiting up to 24 hours until the process finishes or an error appears. Usually when I do a major update on Windows I do it before bed and leave the whole night running.

Link to Dell support site article about it:

Optional updates has been disabled due to an insistence of installing an old driver for my HP printer.

Advance Options is the only 'Options' type selection showing.

Okay, I'll give it more time. Updates usually are quite quick.

Edition Windows 10 Home

Version 20H2

Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.2020.0

The window is showing:

Updating Windows 10. Please wait.

Percent complete:

I would interpret that to indicate that the install hasn't actually started?

After 14+ hrs I did a re-boot. Re-start was normal, nothing was installed. Prior to that I had gone into 'services' and stopped/started Windows update. Monitoring Task Manager confirmed that no processer activity was going on related to Windows Update. I also tried to run the Windows update assistant but it wouldn't due to a process was already going on (well, loaded anyway, obviously not active).

So I initiated the computer re-boot

For now, not going to try to re-initiate the update.

Thanks to all for suggestions.

Let us check the Installation log to find why the update failed. Please share the logs as mentioned in this article. You should use a File sharing service like Onedrive or Media Fire to upload files and share the link in the next reply.

  • The Panther logs. Files named Setupact.log and Setuperr.log from the following path C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther

  • The Rollback logs: These usually are created if Windows Update rolls back. Files named Setupact.log and Setuperr.log from the following path C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback

  • [Only if the error code is 0xC1900101-0x30018] The Device Install Log from C:/$Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback\setupapi\setupapi.dev.log

You can open the folder directly by pasting the path in Run dialog box.

As the log size might be large consider zipping before uploading.
