Unnecessary apps in C:\Program Files\WindowsApps

I see a lots of versions of the same app in C:\Program Files\WindowsApps. These are apps that I don't even have installed. Overall they are taking up about 10GB.

  1. How can I remove these apps completely?
  2. Or can I keep only the most recent version?

The storage sense suggested here or disk cleanup of system files has not helped.

Here is the log of some of the unnecessary apps with sizes in MB

Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

WindowsApps is a hidden folder where Windows 10 keeps installed apps from the Store. If you are not using any of the app that are showing up, I would request you to uninstall the application. You can remove the programs/applications that you do not need. There are 2 ways you can remove Windows applications:

Method 1: Using Windows Settings.

  1. Open Windows Settings (Windows key + I).

  2. Then please click on Apps.

  3. Now scroll down to the applications you want to uninstall, click on them and then click on Uninstall.

  4. You will be able to remove them.

Method 2: Using PowerShell command.

  1. Open PowerShell and run it as Administrator.

  2. Then type: Get-AppxPackage PackageFullName | Remove-AppxPackage

Note: Replace Packagefullname with the name of the application. Package name can be obtained by running the following command on PowerShell: Get-AppxPackage | Select Name, PackageFullName.

Package name for the application you have mentioned are:

  • Candy Crush: king.com.CandyCrushSaga

  • Hidden City Mystery of Shadows: 828B5831.HiddenCityMysteryofShadows

  • Disney Magic Kingdoms: A278AB0D.DisneyMagicKingdoms.

For example: To uninstall Candy Crush using PowerShell, you will need to type the following command:

Get-AppxPackage king.com.CandyCrushSaga | Remove-AppxPackage

3. Once you run the above command, the application will be uninstalled.

As mentioned in my first post, these are folders of apps that are not even installed. I don't see why new versions of these apps are downloaded every few weeks and eat up space.

It appears that these are apps promoted by Microsoft. I'm OK to give download bandwidth and disk space but only for 1 version. Not for several versions.

How do I recover space taken by not-installed apps?

Hi,

Thank you for replying back. I appreciate your time and patience.

Please note that space will be taken only by installed apps.  You can view the list of all the installed apps by running the PowerShell command: Get-AppxPackage | Select Name, PackageFullName

Once you have the list, you can uninstall the apps that are not required by running command provided in the first response. This will remove the apps and free up the space taken by the app. Also it will prevent installations of any newer versions of the app.

Hello,

sorry Naresh_K, what you say is nonsense. I have 570 Folders inside C:\Program Files\WindowsApps and over 300 are from Apps that definetelyare not inistalled.

neither "Get-AppxPackage *candy*" lists candy crush nor is it listed under settings/apps or control panel/software. so it is not installed. But it has 36!!! folders with 7GB of data in "C:\Program Files\WindowsApps" one folder for each litle subversion, e.g.:

king.com.CandyCrushSaga_1.1471.3.0_x86__kgqvnymyfvs32

king.com.CandyCrushSaga_1.1471.4.0_x86__kgqvnymyfvs32

king.com.CandyCrushSaga_1.1471.5.0_x86__kgqvnymyfvs32

it is annoying because all unwanted folders user more then 17GB. on an 256gb ssd it is not a little less.

Regards

Bootscreen

So, what Naresh says is indeed incorrect. Apps that don't appear in Settings -> Apps & Features or in Get-AppxPackage continue to be downloaded and take up disk space.

Since I started this post, the following have been downloaded and are taking up 1.7GB extra space:

I just noticed the same, candy crush, hidden city ... dont have the apps installed, perhaps if I ever did I uninstalled them in the past.

Anyway, I took a leap of faith and shift deleted the folders (permanent delete).  So far ... so good, no system instability.  Have not restarted yet.  Freed up 9 GB .... ridiculous that the idiotic fools at Microsoft will not answer this question.

How did you delete?

Take ownership and then delete? Just want to be sure before attempting changes.

This is on my private pc, of which I am administrator.  I did not do anything special.  In explorer, I simply highlighted any folders with names that include

CandyCrushSaga

And HiddenCityMysteryofShadows

And then held down the shift button while pressing the delete button, it prompted to ask me if I am sure I want to permanently delete these folders, and I clicked yes.

Did not do anything further.  Will also add I am not an IT professional but know my way around a computer decently well, so take my advice at your own risk.  But it was logical to me that if I do not have any apps that refer to these files, deleting them shouldn't be a problem.  I have experienced zero problems since deleting the folders so in my case it was fine.

Hope this helps.
