Unable to take caps off at login screen only

This issue only happens on the login screen after booting up.  Dell Inspiron 1525, windows 10 with all the latest updates.

The letters are all in caps and instead of numbers its the cap equivalent, i.e. ! instead of 1.  The caps lock is NOT on. If I sign out and log in to the other account on the laptop there is no issue on the login page.  I've uninstalled the keyboard driver in the device manager then rebooted, same issue.  Searched for a solution but can't find one.

Please advise.

Thank you,

Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

We can imagine how difficult it could be and we truly appreciate for the details, time and effort that you have taken to work on this issue. However, we would need some more information regarding the issue.

  • Are you signed in with a Microsoft account or a local account?

  • Does this issue occur only after switching the user account?

Method 1: Try with On-screen keyboard.

From the login page, click on the Ease of access icon. Select On-Screen keyboard and try to type the password. If this doesn’t work, follow the method 2.

Method 2: Modify registry.

Note: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. To backup and restore registry key, refer Microsoft article on How to back up and restore the registry in Windows.

  1. Tap on Windows and R key at the same time on the keyboard.

  2. Type: regedit

  3. Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard

  4. Now in the right pane, double click on "InitialKeyboardIndicators".

  5. Change its value to: 0

  6.  Exit registry editor and restart your system to take effect.

If you would like me to provide additional advice, simply respond to this thread. I will get notified and I’ll reply to you as soon as I can.

The onscreen keyboard works fine.  Checked the reg entry, it is already set as 0.

Anything else?

Method 1: Tap on Shift key.

The alternate to Caps Lock key is the Shift key which might be causing this issue. In the login page, press and hold the Shift key for 8 seconds and then try to enter the password. This option will turn off the Caps lock key behavior.

Method 2: Change the Cap lock key settings.

This behavior can occur when the option Shift key is selected to turn on the Caps lock key. To change these settings, follow the steps given below:

  1. Go to Windows Settings.

  2. Click on Devices.

  3. Now, click on the Typing on the left plane.

  4. Scroll down and click on Advance Keyboard Settings in the right pane.

  5. Click on Language bar Options.

  6. Click on Advanced key tab.

  7. Select the option: Press the CAP’s lock.

  8. Click on Apply and Ok. Now, lock the system and try to sign in again.

We await your response.
