Unable to right click task bar items in Windows 10

I'm able to left click the start icon, my task bar shortcuts, and the tray icons, but I can't right click any of them. Nothing happens. However, I can't left click the clock to show the calendar, or the notification center. Night light doesn't work at all anymore either, even from Settings, and I can't even open the Notification center at all anymore. It all seems so random.

It seems like my taskbar is just completely broken. Any possible fixes?

Hi Flebsy. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 year Windows MVP, and Volunteer Guardian Moderator here to help you.

This is being widely reported recently and is likely related to a WIndows Update. See if you can System Restore to a point before the problem began following this guide: http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/computing/how-t...

You can System Restore from Repair Mode if it will not work in Windows, following one of these paths: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanc...

If that fixes it again monitor what Updates are installing in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Update History to uninstall and block the Updates that are causing this: https://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-to-uninsta...

There are also fixes that are working for right click dysfunction reported recently here:
https://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-file-exp...

Another fix working for this is to find a right click shell extension that has malfunctioned due to latest Update:
https://www.winhelponline.com/xp/slowrightclick...

Right click Start button to open Task Manager, show More Details, then choose Processes tab, scroll down to Windows Processes, then further down to Windows Explorer. Right click to Restart, click OK. Restart PC.

Check in Settings > System > About what version you're running. If less than 1903 install the Media Creation Tool from this link http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m... choosing Download Tool Now, install the tool, open it and choose Upgrade this PC Now. This will save your files and apps while bringing you up to the latest version by the most stable method. It will also bring all of your Updates current and solve most problems since it reinstalls Windows.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Idential problem here. It began immediately after KB4512941 went in. After uninstalling that update, the problem disappeared. After a 7 day update pause, the system automatically reinstalled KB4512941, and the problem returned. (Unfortunately, the system no longer allows uninstalling that update.)

I have the same problem on windows 10 1909. I cannot right click icons in taskbar, I can't event left click on the network section, the wifi networks are not showing up. so I must use a network cable everywhere I go because i cannot connect to a new wireless network because the list does not show up...

each update are botched updates. Microsofty should pay people for QA like they did in the past..

Hi sir, I have also experienced the exact same thing.

Not only the right-click taskbar icons and Wifi network unable to show up, in my case also my mailbox cannot open, it will auto app close after a minute or two.

My Windows & search icons cannot be used as well. Nothing happened when I clicked it. Basically I cannot search any apps at all with these two basic functions down.

All the mini features on the right side under the notification button (e.g Bluetooth, Project, Location etc) are also gone and empty...

We are in dire need of help from Microsoft to rectify these issues...

Hello - I don't have all the details with me but Iwanted to respond that I was able to restore all lost functionality by uninstalling a windows update that went out in late Oct 2019.

Good luck.

In case this helps someone:

A week ago after Windows Updates, I lost all keyboard functionality in Windows. It worked inside applications such as Word, but not directly in Windows. I uninstalled the recent updates and paused updates for a week.

Today, Windows Update wanted to run and I let it. It installed one update: KB4524147. After the update, I could not right click on icons on the taskbar and also Microsoft Edge would not run. I first tried fixes I saw for Edge, including completely deleting the directory and reinstalling. That did not work.

So, I uninstalled Windows Update KB4524147. All is back to normal.
