Unable to install update or create a restore point

original title: System Restore and Windows Update not working

When I try to update windows 7 ultimate I get to the point of clicking on Install Updates and then it tries to create a restore point.  It hangs and never installs the updates!

I've done everything but reinstall windows.  Any help would be appreciated.

Methinks your computer got infected while Charter Internet Security (beta) was installed and that it's still infected.

See...

     Cleaning a Compromised System

Back-up any personal data (none of which should be considered 100% trustworthy at this point) then format the HDD & do a clean install of Windows. Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT fix this!

After the clean install, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" so take care of EVERYTHING on the following page BEFORE otherwise connecting the machine to the internet or a local network (i.e., other computers) AND BEFORE connecting a flash drive, SDCard, or any other external drive to the computer:

And for G-d's sake, never, EVER re-enable AutoRun/AutoPlay on external drives again!

Hi,

1.       Does the process freeze at the time of creating a restore point?

2.       Do you get any error message or code?

3.       Does the computer freeze or just the Windows Update window?

Step 1: Run the Windows update troubleshooter and check for the issue. Refer the below mentioned link.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Troubleshoot-problems-with-installing-updates

Step 2: If this does not help, you can put the computer in a clean boot state and then try to install these updates. Follow the below mentioned steps.

1.       Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration Utility.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

2.       On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)

3.       On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.

4.       Click OK, and then click Restart.

5.       Now try installing the updates.

Note: Make sure you put the computer back to Normal Startup once troubleshooting is completed.
