Unable to install last 2 insider builds!? Stopcode "Driver Overran Stack Buffer"

Hello,

for the past two releases of insider preview builds in the fast ring, I haven't been able to install them. Currently, I'm still running 18932. Yesterday, I tried updating to 18941. All installation attempts left me with the same bluescreen stopcode "Driver Overran Stack Buffer".

I tried turning off fast startup as this seems to have caused issues in the past. Didn't work.

Hi Jonas,
I am Sumit, an Independent Advisor and a 2-Year Windows Insider MVP here to help.

The last two insider builds have a storage driver issue which is I think related to your problem. It probably should be fixed in the next build.

Hope that helps.

Hello Sumit,

Thank you for the quick response.

This means I just have to wait for the next release and don't need to take any further steps?

Kind regards,

Jonas

Hi Jonas,

Yes. The update would try 3 times to install before it holds back for the next manual try or the next update.

That's known bug announced in insider blog for build's 18936 and 18941

https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/tag/windows-insider-program/#MPbCd5P3mT44eqZX.97

Known Issues

  • A limited number Insiders attempting to install Build 18936 may experience install failures with error code c1900101 due to a compatibility bug with a storage driver on their device. The device will attempt to install, fail, and successfully roll back to the currently installed build on the device. Attempted re-tries to install the build, either manual or automatic, will not bypass this issue. A fix is forthcoming, but there are no known workarounds currently.

New build 18945.1001 pushed out today, fixed the upgrade problem on the MSI GT70.

Intel RST 17.5.1.1021 worked fine without any change.

No Driver Overran Stack Buffer anymore, it went through several reboots during the update without any issue.

I upgraded a fully functional current release 18362.239 to 18945.1001.

Everything came up fine and the Intel storage controller driver is the same that I had before the Upgrade.

17.5.1.1021 dated 6/20/2019.

The following messages started to come up opening file explorer.

"Intel Optane(tm) Memory Pinning. Unable to load DLL 'iaStorAfsServiceApi.dll'.

Had to uninstall Intel Optane Pinning Extentions. See Link below.

 https://forums.intel.com/s/question/0D50P00004HLQhJSAX/everytime-i-open-windows-explorer-or-right-click-a-file-this-error-always-shows-intel-optanetm-memory-pinning-unable-to-load-dll-iastorafsserviceapidll-the-specified-module-could-not-be-found-exception-from-hresult0x8007007l-windows-explorer?language=en_US

I reinstalled Intel RST 17.5.1.1021 dated 6/20/2019. again and the message "Unable to load DLL 'iaStorAfsServiceApi.dll' did not show up anymore.

I don't understand why Intel RST setup is installing the Optane Pinning Extentions on a system that does not have Optane Memory ? Perhaps that is a question for Intel.

I went back to RST driver and Intel Chipset SATA/PCIe 16.8.2.1002 dated 2/27/2019, which is the one I originally had in this machine, no need for Optane Memory support, this machine (MSI-GT70-0NC) does not have Optane Memory, just a Raid 0 SSD 256GB+256GB and an Hitachi 768GB HDD.

The Intel Support site just points to the latest drivers with Optane support, but Intel DSA tool shows that 16.8.2.1002 is the latest one when it scans this machine.

Perhaps the latest Driver with Optane support is compatible, but not required, so I'll stick to this one for now till I get a better explanation.

It works fine with Build 18362.267 and preview build 18945.1001, no weird messages about  Optane Memory.

Just ran Intel DSA again today July 27/2019 around 7:30PM and Intel updated the RST driver and Storage controller to 17.2.0.1009 Dated 2/12/2019.  No weird messages from Optane Pinning yet.
