Unable to install ACDSee and Skype, Error: 1317, inability to create directory in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs.

Hi,

A few days ago I had some problems with my ACDSee installation, so wanting to install the new version, i uninstalled my ACDSee program.

After I tried to install the newest one, i ran into Error 1317, inability to create directory in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs.

I tried to check for administrator (I'm the only user of this notebook) but the problem remains the same. The folder itself is fine and I can create folders inside it, but installing ACDSee has proven to be impossible.

Today, I ran into skype problem as the program completely disappeared from my computer. I downloaded it again and proceeded to install it, only to get the same Error 1317.

Other programs installed in the meantime were installed correctly.

The start menu itself has had problems previously that are still unresolved -when using the search engine on start menu, i cannot click on any results I get (clicking does not work). Clicking on apps on the start menu works, though.

Hi Francesca,

Error: 1317 might occur if the permissions of a folder in Program Data are corrupt. Let's take the ownership of C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder and check if that helps. I would suggest you to follow the steps provided below:

Above folder is hidden, we need to unhide it first. Refer to the below steps:

Step 1:

a)  Press Windows and x together and select Windows Explorer.

b)  Click on View tab and Click on Options at the top right corner.

c)  Click the View tab, and then click Show hidden files, folders, and drives.

d)  Uncheck the box which states Hide protected operating system files.

e)  Click Yes to confirm, and then click OK.

Now browse to the following location:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

To give full control to the Programs folder, refer to this step.

Step 2:

a)   Right click on the folder and click Properties.
b)  Click Security Tab, click Edit under Group or User Names and click Add.
c)   Type “Everyone” and click check names.
d)  Click Ok.
e)  Click Full Control under Permissions for everyone.
f)   Click Apply and click Ok.
g)  Click Ok.

Note: After you complete the troubleshooting, follow the above method, hide the files that we have unhide.

For the Start screen search issue, run search and index troubleshooter.

a. Press Windows key + X and click on Control panel.

b. Click on Troubleshooting.

c. Select view all on the top left corner.

d. Run search and indexing troubleshooter.
