Unable to edit images with Paint 3D

Until a month or so ago I was able to edit images, mostly PNG, by simply right clicking the image, choosing 'edit with Paint 3d' and it would open up and I would be able to do what I wanted. Now the only result is a message telling me I need to go to the Microsoft Store to get the proper app.

Have attempted:

the various repair/refresh/restore options as suggested by the help page via an article link provided by the IT department at work.

uninstalling the onboard Paint 3D and replaced it with the version on the Microsoft Store. Neither of these had any effect.

A couple of days ago went to the Microsoft help page and saw a posting stating that the app that displays images had been updated but that the mechanism for linking Paint 3D to it for image editing had been omitted. This is a newbie type mistake that never should have happened. Also noticed that there are a lot of unhappy customers out there that want this fixed. Promptly.

Is there a viable work around that can get me back in business until Microsoft wakes up, smells the coffee, and fixes the mess they made?

John,

Apologies for the late response. Have had an unending stream of things crowding this out, including it being buried in the daily email flood. Have used the link you provided and tried the first idea there of opening paint and then go to the item and seeing if it works. Nope.

The one at the bottom, replacing the current version with an older one seems promising. Am not tech savvy so will ask a probably dumb question. Will the new older version overwrite the one currently there or should I delete it first? There is a mention of turning off automatically updating store apps. How is that done?

Thank you,

Hoyt Bowman
