Unable to connect to internet using xfinitywifi hotspot signal, DNS server is not responding" or "Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (primary DNS server)

Original Title: 8.1 discriminating between wifi

My 8.1 Acer laptop provides internet access via the wifi signal from my Asus router.  I am using that wifi connection to submit this question.  I am not trying to establish a wifi connection, I already have one.  I just want an xfinitywifi connection using 8.1.

My old Vista laptop provides internet access via the same router wifi signal and also via the neighbourhood xfinitywifi signal.

However, 8.1 does not provide internet access via the public xfinitywifi signal.  So 8.1 makes a distinction between the router wifi and the public xfinitywifi hotspot signal from Comcast.  The xfinitywifi icon has an exclamation mark against it unlike the router wifi icon.

When connecting to xfinitywifi, sometimes there is a message that the connection is limited, or that the connection is taking longer than usual, but it usually does end up saying "connected"  However, there is no internet access from the alleged connection.   Windows troubleshooter sometimes finds nothing, other times says "DNS server is not responding" or "Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (primary DNS server)".

Hours of searching on the internet has found no answer.  Comcast and Acer have no clue as to how or why 8.1 does this or how to solve the problem..

Does anyone at Microsoft have a clue?

have you connect to "xfinitywifi " network before?

some public wifi networks require user input trough their browser first.

is xfinitywifi you own wifi?

could you please: press "Windows key + R" on your keyboard  and type cmd into the box, hit enter and input following command into the command promt:

netsh wlan show all

and then paste the output here.

edit:

if you're unsure how to copy output from command promt type following instead:

netsh wlan show all > .\desktop\output.txt

this will create a output.txt on your desktop with contents.

If I haven't reply to you for longer time it could be my PC was seized by FBI.

xfinitywifi is a public hotspot signal provided by various means including gateways rented by customers of Comcast, a cable company.  It requires a password to connect.  I do not have a Comcast gateway but I do have a password as a Comcast cable customer.  I am not asked for a password when connecting, which I assume is because the IP address was not acquired.  On the Vista laptop, I entered the password once in a browser and every time I turn the laptop on, the internet is available through xfinitywifi without having to re-enter the password.

While "connected" to xfinitywifi:

Thank you for reply,

could you please provide one more info, while connected to "xfinitywifi" same as before, but type:

ipconfig /all

and then paste the output here

EDIT:

You said you once entered a password into browser while using Vista and also you said you're their costumer, It looks you'll have to do this process again, because according to their FAQ here is how you activate your network once you connect:

  1. Enable your WiFi on your wireless device.
  2. Find and select the XFINITY WiFi network (network name: “xfinitywifi”) and launch your browser. The browser will redirect you to the XFINTY WiFi sign in page (if you don't see the sign in page, you may have to type a different address in your Web browser - such as www.xfinity.com - to be redirected to the XFINITY WiFi sign in page).
  3. Sign in using your Comcast Email or username and password, then start browsing the Web.

The above means you need to connect first, and the open browser and type the address in, in order to sign in.

but paste the ipconfig /all anyway, and also try to perform above steps to sign in..

If I haven't reply to you for longer time it could be my PC was seized by FBI.

The password was entered on another computer which has Vista on it.  That computer is currently connected to the internet, browser able to open websites, via xfinitywifi.

In 8.1 with xxfinitywifi as the only connection, steps 2 and 3 can not be completed because the browser does not open ANY website including xfinity.com.   THAT IS THE PROBLEM.

If I connect via the wifi on the router, and enter xfinity.com, it automatically changes to comcast.net and logs me in to my Comcast account.  That can not happen with xfinitywifi as the only connection because NO WEB PAGE OPENS when a browser is launched.

The xfinitywifi icon in the list of area wifi signals has an exclamation mark against it indicating a DYSFUNCTION in the combination of 8.1 and xfinitywifi, a public hotspot wifi signal.  The symptom of that dysfunction is NO INTERNET ACCESS by any browser.

There may be a connection between xfinitywifi and the 8.1 laptop but it does not result in a browser being able to open a website.  I appreciate you trying to help.  Do you now grasp the concept?

xfinitywifi as the only connection:

Ok, I see now...

According to the xfinitywifi page LINK  it says this:

  • Limited Free Trial: At select XFINITY WiFi hotspot locations, visitors are allowed two 60-minute complimentary sessions per month. You must wait 24 hours between sessions.

What that obviously means is that you can use only one IP (one PC) to use your costumer password for unlimited browsing.

You have 2 options:

Option 1. Contact them for support or something and read the above link about FAQ

you can also try to open browser when connected to xfinitywify browser and goto following addres http://10.224.0.1

maybe that would open the sign in page.

Option 2. However it is not the end of the world, if your PC is close enough to the one with Vista, you can still make a progress by sharing internet connection from Vista to the other PC's.

I see no other option in order to "hack" them but to create your own shared network from Vista to your PC with which you want to connect.

If you want to do so then please perform following steps on your Vista laptop/PC:

NOTE: following steps assume your Vista laptop is connected with wireless adapter to xfinitywifi.

and that your other PC/laptop is close enough to the Vista laptop.

open command prompt as Administrator and type following commands:

netsh wlan set hosted ssid="MyHomeWifi"

netsh wlan set hosted key=0123456789 keyusage=persistent

netsh wlan set hosted mode=allow

netsh wlan start hosted

Once you perform the above command on your Vista laptop/PC do following:

goto:

"Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections"

right click network adapter which is used on Vista to connect to xfinitywifi and click properties

click on sharing tab

check the "allow other network users to connect trough this computers' internet connection"

click OK to save settings.

next step is to check if sharing service is running...

goto:

"Control Panel\System and Security\Administrative Tools"

open services as Administrator and check if "Internet connection service" is running, if not double click on service and click "Start"

Next step is to check if firewall rules are enabled:

goto:

"Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Firewall"

click on "advanced settings" and navigate to outbound rules.

enable all the rules from "internet connection sharing" group or whose name begin with "Internet connection sharing".

do the same for inbound rules.

At this point you should be able to connect to "MyHomeWifi" whose password is 0123456789

Let me know if that worked for you and if there are any issues.

If I haven't reply to you for longer time it could be my PC was seized by FBI.

No, you do not yet see.

Sorry, I facilitated you going off on the wrong track when I said that the Vista computer was connected to the internet via xfinitywifi.  What I was trying to emphasize is that the Vista computer has no problem providing internet access using xfinitywifi and that PROVES something.  That laptop is now shut down and it is totally irrelevant whether it is on or off or even exists except for what it proves.

The Vista computer is IRRELEVANT EXCEPT that it PROVES that the xfinitywifi signal is good and strong here where I am and can provide internet access to a properly functioning computer.  The 8.1 laptop will not open any website when connected to xfinitywifi alone so it is not functioning properly.  That is wrong, bad, dysfunctional, abhorrent, disoriented, faulty, time-wasting, and extremely annoying.

I really do appreciate your efforts to help but you still do not get it.

Any browser on the 8.1 laptop should be able to open a website when there is a connection to public xfinitywifi alone.  If I take the 8.1 laptop to another location, and the public xfinitywifi hotspot signal is in the air in that area, I should be able to have a browser on that computer open a web page!!!  The 8.1 laptop is not going to do that anywhere in the nation if it will not do it where I am right now.  What more can I say to explain this?

xfinitywifi as the only connection:

PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> ping www.yahoo.com

Pinging fd-fp3.wg1.b.yahoo.com [98.138.253.109] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 98.138.253.109: bytes=32 time=75ms TTL=53
Reply from 98.138.253.109: bytes=32 time=152ms TTL=53
Reply from 98.138.253.109: bytes=32 time=141ms TTL=53
Reply from 98.138.253.109: bytes=32 time=142ms TTL=53

Ping statistics for 98.138.253.109:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 75ms, Maximum = 152ms, Average = 127ms

So it pings properly if i understand this correctly, but no browser can open a web page!!!  On non-public, non-hotspot wifi, websites do open on this 8.1 laptop.

I want to be able to take this 8.1 laptop anywhere on the globe that an xfinitywifi public hotspot is available and be able to open a webpage just like everyone else!

Something is not right, stopping access to ALL websites when I connect to public hotspot xfinitywifi alone.  What could it be?

Can you connect if you disable any Firewall on your machine, AND, any Firewall inside the Asus router?

If you were to download another browser, such as Mozilla Firefox, or similar, can you then connect with a different browser?

Another thing that might do something is disabling ipv6?

How to disable IPv6 or its components in Windows

Re-enable anything tried if it makes no difference.

What that obviously means is that you can use only one IP (one PC) to use your costumer password for unlimited browsing.

That is not correct for a Comcast cable customer like me and in any case is not relevant.

If you more carefully read all that I have stated, you will perceive what the issue is.
