Trouble with adding my son's account to family safety and correcting his age.

On my son's windows 11 pc he originally set himself up with an administrator account, but I have now changed this so that I am the administrator and his is a standard account.

His email address did have the wrong date of birth on - he is 14 but he had set it to age 24. He has now corrected the date of birth on his email account. I have added his account to family safety and it shows up with his profile name and email address in the family members list, but it still says he's an adult.

On his PC, on the log in page there are now 2 accounts connected with the same email address- his original one and an additional one that came up after I followed the steps on the 'how to connect a device' help screen on Family Safety.

How can I sort this out so there is one account on his PC, with his correct details, with Family Safety functions available?

Hello Mim

Thank you for contacting Microsoft support

I can understand your concern. Don't worry, I'm here to help you solve this problem.

1. Correct Family Safety Age Display:

Even though you've updated his date of birth, the system might still classify him as an adult due to cached data. Here’s how to ensure it reflects the correct age:

  • Sign in to your Microsoft Family Safety account at Microsoft Family Safety.

  • Locate your son in the family members list and ensure his updated details appear there.

  • If it still lists him as an adult, remove him from the family group:

    1. Click Remove from family group.

    2. Re-add him to the family group using his corrected account (ensure it’s the account with the correct date of birth).

  • Once re-added, the system should now register him as a child under 18 and apply Family Safety features automatically.

2. Remove Duplicate Accounts on His PC:

The issue of duplicate accounts (with the same email address) often arises when linking or syncing accounts. Here’s how to clean it up:

  1. Check Account Settings:

    • Go to Settings > Accounts > Family & Other Users.

    • Look for duplicate accounts under “Other Users” or “Family Members.” If duplicates exist, remove the incorrect one:

      • Click the account > Remove.

  2. Confirm Sign-In Accounts:

    • On his PC, open the Start menu and search for "Manage your accounts."

    • Ensure only the correct account with Family Safety linked is logged in.

  3. Restart and Verify Login Screen:

    • After removing duplicates, restart the PC and confirm that only one profile for your son appears on the login screen.
