Tried to fix defaultuser0 ghost user issue but something went wrong

defaultuser0 has always been the default profile to log into whenever I start my pc but it doesn’t appear anywhere once I’ve signed in to my account. I tried a suggestion from a previous post here which directed me to delete the key called S-1-5-21… from registry editor.

So I did but it didn’t get rid of defaultuser0, AND THEN all the apps on my side stopped working BUT NOW my account has been completely reset to default settings, so my files have disappeared.

Please help, I need my files back

Hi, This is Ramesh.

Deleting that SID in the registry seems to have erased that profile, and Windows has created a new profile for your account.

Please see if you can undo the changes by performing a System Restore rollback.

If no restore points are available, try to recover the files from the old profile folder.

Open the "C:\Users" folder and locate your old user profile folder. Enter the folder and find the files in that folder (and subfolders). Here are the common locations to look at:

c:\users\{profile folder}\desktop
c:\users\{profile folder}\documents
c:\users\{profile folder}\downloas
c:\users\{profile folder}\music
c:\users\{profile folder}\pictures
c:\users\{profile folder}\videos

If the files were synced to OneDrive, check these locations:

c:\users\{profile folder}\onedrive\desktop
c:\users\{profile folder}\onedrive\documents
c:\users\{profile folder}\onedrive\music
c:\users\{profile folder}\onedrive\pictures
c:\users\{profile folder}\onedrive\videos

You can use the third-party "Everything" app from VoidTools.com to quickly locate your files in the old profile folder, if necessary.
