Touchpad pinch to zoom - increase zoom level vs magnify page.

On one (HP) laptop, when I do the two-finger pinch/zoom gesture on any browser, it will magnify what the page. They I can scroll (swipe) around the zoomed-in page, seeing everything larger.

On the other (Dell 5580) laptop when I pinch/zoom, it will increase the zoom level of the page (110, 120, 130, etc). This increases the text size and rescales the page, but it does NOT increase the size of any images on the page.

How do I make my Dell touchpad behave like my HP?

Thanks!

Mike

Hi Mike. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

It all depends on the driver software for the touchpad, what features it has and how it lays them out to change Settings in Devices > Touchpad and the Additional Settings box where most drivers place at least one full tab of Settings.

1) Update the Touchpad driver from the PC maker's Support Downloads web page, using the full model number, Serial Number or Dell Service Tag on sticker. Compare the latest drivers available for download with the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu. Make sure you also have the latest BIOS or UEFI firmware, Chipset, Display (Video), Sound, USB3, Bluetooth, Network and all other drivers, or else download and install the latest now.

2) If that doesn't help then enter Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start button, go to Mice > Touchpad and then Driver tab. Choose Update Driver, then Automatic to see if it gets a better driver that resolves the problem. If not try Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick to try all previously installed drivers.

If the touchpad doesn't show up, from Device Manager Action tab choose Scan for Hardware changes.

3) If that doesn't work then try uninstalling driver, Restart PC using keyboard to Ctrl Alt Del, on blue screen tab to Power Icon in bottom right, press Enter, arrow down to Restart, press Enter to restart to reinstall the driver.

4) Run the hardware troubleshooter at Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot. > Additional Troubleshooters.

4) Next try the troubleshooting steps here Windows 10 touchpad not working:

https://helpdeskgeek.com/help-desk/fix-touchpad...

https://www.lifewire.com/fix-touchpad-not-worki...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWtDnXVCAjs

5) Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad to go over the Settings. Then choose Additional Settings which opens the Mouse properties box. The Touchpad software installs a tab onto it - usually the last one - that should have more settings to check, including a checkbox to Disable Touchpad when USB pointing device is attached. This prevents palm drag from causing the cursor to jump

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for the reply.

I've tried all the steps you mentioned, but functionality is still the same. Touchpad works fine, but pinch/zoom continues to adjust zoom level in all browsers, rather than magnifying the view.

I'm thinking it might be a Dell issue. I'll open a ticket with them in the morning.

Thanks!
Mike

Mike -

1) What is the behavior if you do manual Zoom on the browser by holding Ctrl and pressing + or - key? Do the images come along? This is of course the default behavior as everything should zoom at once and I have no idea why the images would not. Do you have Scaling set at 100%? Try that.

2) Also The Display driver is so important here that merely updating it is sometimes not enough. So let's try everything possible to get it working correctly:

First make sure you have updated the Display driver from the PC or Display adapter maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag - from the sticker on the PC.

If necessary first remove the old driver using DDU https://www.wagnardsoft.com/content/ddu-guide-t... (not necessary with Microsoft Basic driver which is a placeholder if nothing else is available) and/or installing in Safe Mode with Networking (so you have internet), or Safe Mode, accessed by one of these methods: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-saf...

While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS/UEFI firmware (very important), network, sound, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

If this doesn't give you the latest or ideal driver for what you need, compare it to the driver offered by the Intel driver update Utility here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/...
or the Nvidia Update utility here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=e...
or the AMD autodect utility here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/P...

For Display issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver.

You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.

Then you will know you've tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.

Adjust the screen resolution until it fits and looks best at Settings > System > Display.

Check for a monitor driver by expediting Windows Updates (including Optional Updates) in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for Updates to install all Updates until no more are offered.

3) Keep in mind you have a one year manufacturer's support, repair and replacement warranty that comes with any hardware so if problems persist you can call on the PC manufacturer's Support to fix or replace it, making sure it gets done soon enough so you can ensure the repairs work in time for the warranty expiration, or extend it. The PC may also still be under Store return policy, I would contact the manager who will often try to help.

4) On a parallel track you might want to post this up in Dell's forums which are quite good with a mix engineers and enthusiasts who may know of the issue and is more brand-specific than a general forum:
https://www.dell.com/community/Dell-Community/c...

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.

Pressing Ctrl +/- results in the same behavior as when I pinch/zoom: the images will get larger, up to a point, but if I zoom in too much, it shrinks back down to fit the screen. And with every step up, the page rescales.

Just so I'm clear about what my issue is. In the video below, this is what I want when I pinch/zoom: https://youtu.be/cN-Y4LR5r-8?t=9

But as I said above, on my laptop, pinch/zoom is basically just doing a ctrl +/- type zoom, which is what I DON'T want.

As for your next suggestions - I appreciate them, but I really don't think the video driver is at fault here. There must be some setting or registry tweak, something to change this functionality.

The display driver controls everything about the display. It is co-equally important here.

Pinch zoom should track what zoom does in a browser. Did you have different functionality before? Did you try System Restore to that point?

Contact Dell Support for support on this if you have tried everything I've suggested which is everything that pertains to Windows.

I downloaded the latest Intel display driver. Rebooted into Safe Mode, ran the DDU, disabled my NIC, restarted, installed the new display driver. Restarted.

No change.

I've never, as far as I can remember, had a laptop where pinch/zoom tracks what Zoom does (crtl +/-). Did you by chance get to see the video I posted? At around 8 seconds in, you will see the desired functionality of pinch/zoom. The entire screen zooms in; it doesn't just increase/decrease the zoom level in 10% increments.

I purchased this laptop via Amazon's "renewed" program, so it's just out of Dell warranty, and they want $100 just to talk to me. I'll try the Dell forum.

Mike, did you try all of the touchpad driver manipulations I gave in Steps 1, 2 and 3 of my first post? Try those again now to be sure.

Hi Greg,

I removed the touchpad device/driver restarted, and installed the latest driver from Dell. Also confirmed all other drivers are up to date.

No change.

Let me know what you find out from Dell forums. You have tried everything there is for Windows if you completed every last one of the steps I gave.

You might also want to ask in the best hardware forums Tom's Hardware here: https://forums.tomshardware.com/ since it's becoming increasingly likely this is a hardware issue. You could test that by attaching a trackpad to see if it works properly.

Keep me posted on your progress as I will be here to help until the case is resolved.
