The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

Split from this thread.

I have a similar problem, except  the lx-6000 appears in the other device list in Device manager with the error below

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.

To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.

So when click update driver it it state Windows is unable to update the driver for this device.

It does not appear as hardware in the Control Panel Sound.

I have tried installing all the latest chipset and Audio drivers for my DELL Latitude E5430(i5), Windows 7 64bit  with no luck.

MY lx-6000 works perfectly in other computers.

One last thing that might help.  Is when my headset is plugged in at boot up the lights come on as if it were recoginsed. however as soon as Windows starts to load the lights go off as if it is disconnected.

Any help appreciated

Hello Colin,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community forum.

I would appreciate if you can provide us the following information to help us understand the issue better.

  1. Is it the first time you are trying to connect it or it was working fine before?
  2. If it was working fine before, did you make any recent changes (Hardware or Software) on your computer?
  3. Have you tried to connect any other headset to this computer? Was the result same?

As you have mentioned that you are unable to install the drivers and getting error “The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)”. It means there might be a chance that some third party application/services or firewall is restricting it to be installed on your computer.

I would suggest you to perform clean boot and then try to disable security software temporarily, if any installed on your computer and then try to install the driver.

Step 1

Perform clean boot.

Putting your system in Clean Boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. You need to follow the steps from the article mentioned below to perform a Clean Boot.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135/en-us

Note: Refer "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting" to reset the computer to start as normal after troubleshooting.

Step 2

Disable Security Software Temporarily.

Disable anti-virus

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Disable-antivirus-software

NoteAntivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Step 3

Install the driver and see if you are able to install it successfully.

Do get back to us with all the information required and result of proposed suggestion.

Regards.

Ramesh Kumar.

Hi Ramesh,

It is the first time I connected this headset and it has never been connected before or ever been working previously.  i have not made any recent h/w or s/w changes

I have tried another headset from a different manufacturer and it works just fine.

I have also tried your suggestions and I still get the error "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)"

Any ideas welcome.

Regards

Colin

Please provide a copy of your System Information file. Type System Information in the Search Box above the start Button and press the ENTER key (alternative is Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information). Select File, Export and give the file a name noting where it is located. Do not place the cursor within the body of the report before exporting the file. The system creates a new System Information file each time system information is accessed. You need to allow a minute or two for the file to be fully populated before exporting a copy. Please upload the file to your OneDrive, share with everyone and post a link here. Reports in normal mode preferred. Please say if the report has been obtained in safe mode.

Hi Colin,

Thank you for the update on the issue.

If issue persist, I would suggest you to check the system files are they working fine or not and to check that try to run System File Checker (SFC) tool.

SFC scan will scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7.

  1. Go to Start, click All Programs and open Accessories.
  2. Right click on Command Prompt in the Program list and then select Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click OK.
  3. In the Command Prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

                                                      sfc /scannow

For more information refer to this link:

Do keep us updated about the issue.

Regards.

I have tried installing all the latest chipset and Audio drivers for my DELL Latitude E5430(i5), Windows 7 64bit  with no luck.

What is the name of the device displaying Error Code 28. What happens when you try to update the driver. When you tried to install the drivers you downloaded from Dell what option did you use? Browse my computer or?

Download the driver and copy it to a folder on your desktop. Write down the path to the folder. If the driver has been zipped you will need to right click on the file and extract to your folder.

Next type Device Manager in the Search box above the Start button and press ENTER. Locate and right click on the device and select Properties. Click on the Driver tab and the Update Driver button. Click on “Browse my computer for driver” and click the Browse button. Type in the Search box the file path to your folder and click on Next. The system should find the driver in your folder and update. If it does not find the driver recheck that the driver is not zipped.

Hi Gerry,

Name of my device is the Microsoft Lifechat LX-6000 headphones.

I have tried install various Dell drivers and most of the Microsoft Audo drivers and still the same issue.  They are a device in the list, just the correct driver for them.

Regards

Colin

Please upload and share with everyone copies of your System and Application logs from your Event Viewer to your OneDrive and post a link here.

To access the System log select Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer, from the list in the left side of the window expand Windows Logs and select System. Place the cursor on System, select Action from the Menu and Save All Events as (the default evtx file type) and give the file a name. Do the same for the Applications log. Do not provide filtered files. Do not place the cursor in the list of reports before selecting Action from the menu. Do not clear logs whilst you have a continuing problem.

I was just about ready to send it back to Amazon, since there were no drivers on the Microsoft website, and all the experts just asked questions that didn't relate. If you get a new device, you just assume these days that it either comes with a disk, you can download, or it is plug and play. I hear your pain. I was so I was totally frustrated.

When I finally saw that it was recognized under "devices" I was able to click on that, and under options was able to switch from the default "speakers" to the second option, which was the LX 6000 and it worked.

Then there was the hurdle that no one tells you: speech recognition. When I clicked on that, and did some training...it now works.
